Sounds like perimenopause to me. Menopause is the day you have gone 1 year without a period. I have reached that milestone. But for about 4 years before I'd have them 15 days apart, then 39 days apart, then 22 days, then 65 days. It drives you crazy. I still have the hot flashes even now. Welcome to the real midlife crisis.

That is exactly what happened to my mom when she started into menopause. She would have periods that lasted for a few weeks- then nothing for 6 months, then periods that came every few weeks... it was all just hit or miss. This went on for about 18 months, if I remember correctly.

I did that very same thing in my late 40s- at 51 I had a hysterectomy- this was the only way to stop the periods as they were becoming one long one and very heavy. During that time i was anemic and moody with other strange issues. I figured at this time in my life I already have all the children i would have and was not planning to get pregnant again. The best thing was the surgery and I have not regretted it for even one minute! Most important is to get to your doctor now and have them check you for everything to make sure you do not have any cancer forming-there is a special test they can do for ovarian cancer-yes it is costly but very necessary at this time. You do need to request it they generally will not think of it. You may not need anything but some drug to help but before you can do you must have a doctor see you. All women are different some change earlier than others and some start their lives early-so we all must be aware of how we are and what is going on in our bodies-this is the best protection we have. Good luck hon and get to your dr. now.

I would definitely discuss this with your doctor, there may be something going on, other than menopause I mean. I have heard that stress can cause you to have weird cycles and extrenuous excersize can cause irregular cycles as well. This is going to sound really weird, and a bit embarrassing, but my husband and I tried to spice things up a bit in the bedroom and we got that new KY stuff that has one for her and one for him, well, that caused me to very lightly bleed the first time we used it. Just trying to help throw any ideas out there that I knew of. Good luck and I hope that everything goes well for you.

I agree with the other ladies, this sounds like menopause. However, if you would like to keep your body on an even keel, there is Red Raspberry Leaf in tea or capsules at the health food store. It is totally side effect free, and is used for women's issues, pregnancy, etc. It doesn't taste great, so if you get the tea, you may want to get a combo tea that is made for menopausal symptoms. It will say on the package or you can ask the clerk.

You could very well be going through the change. If you have any older female relatives ask them when they started going through the change. I also went through it in my 40's. My mother is still alive an she told me she stopped early an my grandmother also so it ran in the genes for me to stop early. You should also consult your ob as you will probally need hormone pills. Hope all goes well.

I have rotation issues with mine, but I have been tracking it for years so I know that when I start 2 to 8 days early, that is is just my pattern. But I take my record in to my annual exams and make sure that my GY agree's.

Like many have said below, if you are worried, call your gy office and ask for the professional opinion.

Good Morning S., I would go to your OB-GYN and be checked. It could be cysts, or endometriosis. Both can cause long & heavy flow. I had Hysti day after Christmas in 1987 at the age of 36. Never regretted anything. But it's very important to be checked. When they did mine it wasn't just a normal hystie. I had to have most everything removed scraped and put back in. They found most of my organs was covered & tangled with the fibers of the Endometriosis. Had a tumor in my colon, removed appendix aso. I was a mess inside.

The OB I saw a few years before that told me, I was ok as long as I could stand it and it was up to me how long that was. Well dumb me put it off a long time. I didn't wait hoping to have more children, we had 2 son's (12 & 10) and hubby had a Vas when the youngest was 2.

My advise S. is easy really. OB-GYN Now the can do laser vaginal hystis if necessary and you are go to go alot quicker. I had everything removed, was on HRT for several years, including injections I gave my self. Now I take nothing and feel super at age 57. See your Dr. S. find out what is going on.

God Bless and I wish you the best

Our periods are affected by our stress levels, a change in diet or exercise...it never hurts to call your doctor if you are really worried, but I am sure it is nothing. I have never had a regular "cycle" in all my life and I am perfectly healthy.
I wouldn't necesarilly jump to the conclusion that it is the starting of menopause.
Lots of luck

I just turned 50 in July. In April last year my period was two or three weeks late, then I had a 2 week heavy period that went over my yearly OB-GYN appt. So I rescheduled in July two days before my birthday they found a cyst after a biopsy and 2 ultrasounds the cyst left on its own. Now my period has been irregular again, I think I'll just put it down to menopause. I can't find anything that maps out what menopause is supposed to be like. I watched the Oprah that talked about a natural type of hormones, I'd like to know where to find a gynecologist that would talk about these with me.
I'd say go to your doctor, I'd probably try to talk to a nurse about what's going on and whether you should schedule an appointment ASAP or wait until your flow stops, I know that's what I wondered. Endometriosis (sp) is another possibility, I think it's not too serious, they have several options besides hysterectomy anymore.
Don't you wish there was a book that would say what menopause was like and when you started what to expect and when you would be over it!

I would think that your going into menopause, but since I've never gone through it I can't say for sure. I'd google menopause symptoms.

Your in perimenopause to early menopause. Your hormones are out of sync. You need to see GYN dr and get checked out. I had to go on a med to get my period to stop after I developed anemia from the excessive bleeding/frequency. After the medication to stop the extra period I then was able to get my cycle back in order.
