When 2 Year Old Is Sick - How Do You Spend Your Day.

Dear Mommas, POssibly another no brainer for many of you, but I am always in a dilemma. In the winter, my LO gets viruses a great deal. I usually try to ensure that we go outside for some fresh air at least once a day, but end up hanging out and resting a great deal later.

My question: on such days, do you allow your LO to watch more TV than normal??? I usually only allow 1 hour per day of videos. Yet, when he is sick and lethargic, I allow maybe 1/2 more as he does not have much energy for other activities, only sporadically.
Or alternatively, what are other activities you do at home while your LO does not feel well?

Thanks as usual, Jilly

What can I do next?

if he is not feeling well i would not worry about activities - when you're sick you stay in bed, relax, watch tv, sleep as much as possible, and cuddle. there's a big difference between having the sniffles and being SICK, however. i wonder which you're talking about. the world doesn't stop around here for a cold. also, if it's winter, i wouldn't make him go outside on sick days..that's a good way to put more strain on his system when he should be healing. just let him heal if he's truly sick. it sounds like perhaps you're a stay at home mom, in which case, the situation is a little different than mine...i work full time.

All rules (okay most) go out the window when kiddo gets sick.

Physical activity lowers or shuts off the immune response (aka one gets more sick and stays sick longer... if you want the details on the way the CNS does that pm me). So the TV is a GREAT tool on keeping active kids settled down so that their minds can stay moderately active while their bodies rest and heal.

When my son is sick the bedding comes down to the couch and we half live on it. He sleeps, watches movies, dozes, eat soup, cuddles, etc. I just make sure to push fluids (chicken soup broth in a sippy cup is great btw... the fats and proteins in it are needed by the immune system to build antibodies... and applejuice is mild and has quick sugar for their brains... I pretty much just alter the two: warm broth, cool apple juice, warm broth, cool apple juice).

Last time my son was sick we did a Pink Panther Marathon.

Usually neither a lot of TV nor juice is allowed in the house. But the TV keeps him rested and he NEEDS the sugars when he's sick. So both get broken out.

Yes, I don't see a problem with that.
They are sick, lethargic, not feeling well, and tired or feverish and not in the mood to focus on anything nor for a long time. My kids nap a lot, when sick.... and watching some movies on tv, is fine.
When I am sick... all I want to do is stay glued to the sofa... especially if with a fever... I get headaches and chills. Not much in the mood for anything besides channel surfing.

When my kids are sick and not themselves... I do not enforce, my so called usual "rules". I let them slack.

all the best,
Susan

Yes I allow more video watching, read lots of books and defintiely tons of cuddles!! If they are up to it they will do a light activity like coloring. If they are just feeling miserable, a bunch of videos for the day isn't going to hurt them =-)

Stay well!!

What makes you feel better when you are sick or what do you want to do?
Honestly for me I want to do nothing, and just like to sit/lay wrapped in a blanket. I will either read, sleep, eat, and watch tv... that is all I want to do. I see nothing wrong when a child is sick to let them do the same.

When my daughter is sick the first day is usually the wrose so she wants to cuddle with me, watch tv/movies, sleep and maybe eat/drink. The following day if she is still sick we take it easy again, usually she is playing a bit more but we stay indoors, but still the majority of the days is spent sitting/laying around and watching tv/movies. By the thrid day she is better or has moved onto a slight cold, we go about our daily activities as normal, but I still will not push her too much if it seems like she is running out of energy quickly.

In the end just read how your child energy level is, if it is just a little cold and the child is still playing a lot with only a little nose blowing or such then I usually go about the daily activities as normal. On the other hand if the child seems very low on energy and just wants to relax then I go with it because that is what the child or any person sick needs to do.

When weather is bad and we can't go out or he's sick, we sleep a lot. Mine still breastfeeds, so he tends to nurse more when sick. We sleep a lot, I will nap with him or read while he naps and lay with him. We do a lot more book reading and cuddling. Definitely more tv than normal. Nothing really other than those things because I really try to encourage the sleep when he's sick.

I am with Riley J. When the kids are sick we do the same thing. The comfy bedding comes down and cartoons on. I also make sure they have plenty of fluids. Mommy gets to be lazy and snuggle with them :) They are only little once.

Depending on just HOW sick my kids are, we read or draw pictures and do puzzles. Generally I let them lead the activities on those kinds of days. And yes, they do end up watching more tv than usual. But when they're sick, my kids just want ME so if the tv gets me an extra hour or two of time to do everything else that needs doing, that's ok - it's not like they're sick everyday.

Yes my kids usually watch a lot of TV when they are sick.
It's one of the only ways I can ensure they are calm and up and making themselves sicker. And keeps them from being bored.

I'm lucky that my son has never been really sick, nor does he get sick often (other than the constant toddler runny nose) but yes, when he's sick, I do let him watch more TV.

He's never really been down for more than a day, so I just limit TV the rest of the week (or over the next few days).

We also spend a lot of time on the couch reading stories. Sometimes the same ones over and over.

Although, the rule of thumb for sick kids is go at their speed. If they're acting fine, then it's probably for them to play like normal.

Keep well!

Reading lots of books is a great idea. Get all snuggly and cuddle together while reading some books. Get into it and act kind of silly to make it more fun for both of you. This is also something he can do by himself.
Letting him lay down and color in a coloring book with some crayons.
Have him play with blocks if he feels up to it.
Sing songs.
Or any simple indoor activity that he enjoys and would be up to doing.
If it's not cold outside, I open up a window in his room or where he is to let him get some fresh air.

I usually do the same as you, let him watch a bit more tv than normal, but after I've tried other things first.
I hope your LO doesn't get too sick this winter, and good luck to you!

Yeagh i put a movie or two on. We are big movie fans. Reading stories is good too. Coloring on the floor with giant paper. Lots of snuggly time. Sometimes just a stroll up and down the street for some fresh air is nice. Put him in a stroller or wagon and just take a few minutes.
