When Do I Send Him In?

My 9 month old son has had a low grade (99-101) fever for 24 hours now. We are leaving home tomorrow and won't be back until Wed. night. I don't know if I should take him in to the doctor or not. He's pretty much himself, just not quite as peppy. Eating, Drinking and Diapers are all o.k. I can't tell why he is running this fever, he has his first four teeth in so I don't think he should be getting more right now. How long should you wait out a fever?

What can I do next?

I think that since you are going out of town that you should take him in if the fever continues. He may have an ear infection and then you will have to go to some walk-in place and we all know how fun that is. My theory is better safe than sorry!

He probably is starting to cut another tooth. If he has no other symptom I would not take him in. But if you feel there is something more going on just call your dr. and see what they think.

If it were me, I would not take him in for a low fever and not acting overly abnormal. After a few days, his immune system should be fighting whatever it is off. It would be unusual that he would be worse on Wednesday.

With my 2 daughters, I've noticed that teething can cause a fever. If you think it's teething, take a look at or feel his gums to see if one of this teeth could be getting ready to come through.

It just depends - might wait to see if any other symptoms arise. I'm sure it's probably worked out by now - hope he's doing okay!!

Not to worry you or anything but this is how my son started when he contracted the virus which causes hand-foot-and-mouth-disease. There is nothing you can do about the disease. It just has to run its course. Watch for red little blisters in his mouth and possibly red bumps on hands and feet. If he has the blisters, he is very contagious until they turn white (in his mouth) which happens within a couple of days. Anyway, other than that, just ensure that your son drinks plenty of fluids and give him some tylenol.

Have you given him any Tylenol? I would say if he has no other symptoms, it would be his teeth. My daughter had 8 teeth by the time she was 9 months, so every child is different. You can always call the nurse line, but I wouldn't worry too much. My daughter had a temp of 104.5 and they suggested I not worry until it was over 105. Easier said than done!

You can call your pedi but more than likely they are gonna say as long as the fever isn't over 105 nothing to worry about. Just have to make sure he is having wet diapers.
