When Does the Leaking Stop?

I have been nursing my son now for three months and my breasts still leak milk when they let down. I thought this was supposed to stop at some point. When will this stop so I can stop wearing these bulky (and unflattering) nursing pads?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advice. I'll look at it like this from now on: At least my milk supply is plentyful and I will feel confident by baby is getting enough to eat. For that peace of mind I can definitly live with the leaking.

I had to wear the pads the entire time, which was til 3 months, and I have a very good friends whose baby is 9 months and she still has to wear the pads. If she feeds him on time then she generally doesn't have a problem, but if they have to wait a little bit for some reason then she will have some leakage. She has to pump after her feeding to remove all the milk that let down and she just freezes it for emergency need. I hope this helps.

Hi A., my name is A. and I am the mother of a set of twin boys who are now 2, that i nursed for 15 months. The leaking i beieve will only stop once you stop nursing. The let down is just a sign from your body that its close to your 3 months olds feeding time. Once you become engorged your breast should hurt to let you know you are about to leak. To keep from having those embarassing moments you might want to care a portable breast pump, ice packs and a lunch box to keep your milk in. This might be TMI but when i statred back to work i actually had coworkers pump me so i could do both breast faster. That takes alot of trust and coordination if you have anymore questions just let me know. Have a good day

Hi! I'm F. I nursed also and as long as you nurse your milk will flow. And what kind of breast pads are you using, I used lanishoh nursing pads they were disposables and you could not even tell that I had them on.

Some women leak alot - others don't leak at all. When you feel your milk starting to let down, try folding your arms across your chest and pressing inward to put direct pressure on your nipples. That should temporarily stop the flow of milk.
Something else you may want to try is a product called "Lily Pads". They are wore on your nipples instead of pads and provide light gentle pressure to prevent letdown. I know you can check online for stores that sell them.

It ends at different times for different mothers. I gave birth to my daughter in 2000 and I breast fed her for only about 2 weeks until I switched to formula. I leaked occassionally all the way until I gave birth to my 2nd daughter in 2003!It was wierd and also annoying! I breastfed my 2nd daughter for about 3 months and a few weeks after I stopped I never had a leak again!I've "heard" that if you take cold cabbage and put it in your bra that supposably helps dry your milk up. I've never done it and I've always wondered if it works. Also I think there are some pills your doctor can give you to help dry it up as well.If you were planning on stopping breast feeding that is. good luck!

hey, i am a mother of two and my last son i nursed until he was 13 months old, the leaking slows down once the baby starts to eat more baby food and nurses less. you will occasionally leak if the let down is alot, say you missed a feeding becuase you had to go to the store, etc.... i used the gerber breast pads and they werent so bad. they are thin but they do the job. i hope this helps. have a great sunday.

Mine leaked for the entire time I nursed. Whichever side I started my baby nursing on, the other side leaked like crazy for the first few minutes. I did like the ultra thin disposable nursing pads by Gerber the best. They're not as bulky as the reusables and don't show through T-Shirts.

I don't recommend trying the LilyPadz nursing pads. They're a thin, flexible clear rubber circle that is supposedly leak-proof. My problem was that they don't breathe at all, so any leaked milk is held against your body and doesn't evaporate, which keeps your breasts from staying clean and dry. I tried them for a week and then switched back to disposables.

Hey A., well every breastfeeding mother has differnt exceriences but unfortunatley I think the leaking is just something we all have to deal with. Unless your little one is a pro at feeding the exact amount every time, more than likely youll have some leaking every once in a while. Im sure youve heard that our milk comes based on supply and demand so if your baby dinks more or less from time to time the leaking is inevitable! Thats the way i was anyway. But im sure youll be glad your toughed it out in the loung run. Good luck!

Mine never did stop leaking. I had to wear nursing pads in my bra the whole 7 months that I nursed. Though not ideal, the positive is that I always had lots of milk!

It was the same when I was nursing it did not stop until I stopped breastfeeding. Though it was not as much after the first few weeks. But I still had to wear the pads in my bra the whole time.

To be honest, in my experience, I have been nursing for 9 months now and I still leak. I still have to wear the nursing pads 24/7. So i am thinking the leaking doesn't stop until you are done nursing.
