When Will My Eyes Adjust?

I got contacts today. They are toric lenses for a pretty severe astigmatism. I have been wearing the trial pair for a couple of hours. the doc said to wear them a little each day until I can build up to a full day. So, does anyone know how long it takes to get used to them? They aren't painful. My eyes just feel dry and a little itchy. I got some rewetting drops and have used them. Any suggestions are welcome. This is kind of a new thing for me. I have glasses that I got about a month ago, but I wasn't loving them too much because of the area above and below the lenses where you can't see. (Stairs were becoming a huge problem!)
Thanks!
ETA they are soft contacts even though they are torics.

What can I do next?

It varies from person to person.
Some adjust in a few days, while other people take a week or so.
A very few people have such sensitive eyes they can never wear contacts.

My kids each started wearing contacts as teens. The first day they put them in at the Drs office and wore them home and for about an hour. The next day, for about 2 hours. 3rd day, 4 hours. 5th day, maybe about 8 or 9 hours and if they felt ok they went to full time for just days. (they now sleeping in them even tho they shouldnt) Anytime they felt gritty or uncomfortable they took them out and waited till the next day to wear them again for about 5 or so hours. It took a couple weeks to get really comfortable wearing them all day and now, years later, every now and then if they have a problem they still take them out and wear glasses for a day and start over. Give it time. Make sure whatever cleaning and soaking solution you use is made for the brand and type of contacts you have. Dont just assume you can buy something cheap from the store. It might not be compatible with the stuff they are made from and can pit the lenses and make them cloudy and painful to wear.

I think after a few days, depending on how long you wear them they will adjust to your eyes. I have worn contacts since 6th grade. I recently got colored contacts from Freshlook and they were a bigger diameter than my normal contacts. After a few days of wearing them they didn't move when I blinked and got used to my eyes.

Give it at least a week. Build up your wearing time, a little longer each day.
If after a month you are still having issues then get reevaluated.

I was wearing soft contacts for like 10 years before going to the toric ones. I did find a lot of difference in how they feel.Toric lenses were uncomfortable initially, the higher the astigmatism the more thicker the lenses, so it feels more uncomfortable.Have you ever tried hard lenses... ewwww.They feel like a piece of glass in your eye. I couldn't manage to get one in my eye, the moment it touched my eye it hurt so bad, I gave up. I loved soft contacts, I would sometimes even take naps wearing them(not good) but really they wouldn't bother M. at all. I hardly used glasses those 10 years, so I was using soft contacts almost the moment I woke up to moment I went to bed. Not many people knew that I had vision problems because they never ever saw M. in glasses. With the torics it took M. few days to feel like there isn't something in my eye .I hate that feeling. And it got better in few days. But somehow I would remove my lenses a little while after geting home. And I started wearing my glasses more often. I don't remember it bothering M. much but I just wanted it out I guess. It definitely wasn't as comfortable as soft lenses. I have been using only my glasses now ever since I had my baby last year. I now think toric lenses really got M. to wearing glasses. I hated glasses before, now I find them very comfortable. One thing I hated with soft torics is how I couldn't focus well sometimes. The lens wouldn't bother M. as such, but things wouldn't be all that clear especially in the evenings when my eyes are tired as well. I used to wet it in solution and wear it again if I needed to go out in the evenings.

It took me a few weeks to get used to/ not even notice the movement of my rigid gas permeables the first time. Then about a day to get used to the weird "thick" feeling of soft lenses, and then only a few hours to get used to the rigid ones again, and the soft ones again.

But there are a few things i CAN'T get used to. Soft Torics are one of them (My focus gets "off". I see the minutia like pollen on my windshield instead of the cars in front of me... as distracting as trying to see through mud smeared all over a windshield instead of tiny specks). I tried them for about 3 months. I'm astigmatic (pretty severly) but I prefer normal soft, or rigid gas permeables.

In every case, from my first pair, to the times I've tried new ones, I've just left them in 24/7 except to clean the hard ones... and excepting a latex pair my opthamologist goofed on. Right there in my chart was "Latex Allergy". Ouch. That was painful.

My brother had hard contacts for a different reason. This has been 31 years mind you but I think it took him two weeks to get used to them.
