Where Can We Make Gingerbread Houses?

Rather than do a kit, I would let the kids imaginations go to work.
Buy a box of gingerbread cookies and buy or make white icing. Maybe another kind of cookie or cracker for roof tiles, chex cereal squares as shutters to the windows, get creative! Go to the bulk candy section of the grocery store. You can just buy what you need by weight, rather than buying boxes of candy. You can get handfuls of whatever they think will look good. Red Licoric whips make awesome walkways and edging around wondows and doors.

We used to make our from graham crackers and "royal icing" made with confectioners sugar and a raw egg white. When they were little, I'd help my kids make the house: 4 squares for the 4 walls of the house, then 2 crackers to form the pitched roof. Once the icing hardens, you can decorate the house with more icing and candies. We used to use leftover candy from Easter and Halloween. By Christmas, lots of it was hardened or the stuff they didn't really like. My kids were happy to use their old candy to make their houses pretty, I was happy to find a way to get rid of it.

I don't know where there is a place to GO, but places like Walmart and Walgreens sells Gingerbread house and train kits that comes with everything, you just build it and decorate it. Good luck.

Hope this will guide you in the right direction. I am actually assembling gingerbread houses tonight so we can decorate them a bit easier tomorrow when my cousin comes over with her child. I know some make the recipe by hand, but I just buy a kit for each child from Bed Bath and Beyond and with the 20% off coupons, each kit is only $8 each. (They also sell mini villages and train gingerbread kits with candies to decorate them for the same price.) A lot of stores sell these kits and they are pretty similar in price. Have fun!

We do it at home every year. We start the week finals ends (usually the first week in december, this year it's next week) and just keep adding onto it all month long :) SUPER cheap to make gingerbread dough and royal icing (the icing is just powdered sugar and water), although it's kind of a pain. This year, we're making a 'Spiderwick' house :) :) :) Fun fun!

If you can't find what you're looking for, but have a Trader Joe's nearby, you may want to try their gingerbread "chalet" style houses - I did one last year with my little ones, and loved it so much we copied the pattern with our own gingerbread to make another. Why not do it at home? Any craft store now carries kits for doing gingerbread houses, including all the pre-baked (hard!) gingerbread pre-cut pieces, the frosting (usually you only have to add water and mix), candy, etc. The basic kits usually are not more than maybe $9 to $12 and often are on sale. These really do work. One piece of advice from someone who's done it a few times --- before you start, gather up several cans of canned food. They're the perfect size and weight to hold up the gingerbread panels that are the sides of the house; put one on each side of the initial "wall" and work from there using other cans of different sizes. You'll need to get the four walls set with the very cement-like frosting before you try to put the roof on. It takes a little patience the first time but it's fun!

we buy the kits and do 2 people to a kit. this year we did 5 of them. it is a contest now lol. the rule is you can use anything in the kitchen along with your kit. kids went and got out halloween candy so our houses are a little different this year. we always do a young person and older person together. no couples allowed. i always print up a blue ribbon and everyone gets a vote. usually let the youngest person win.

Why not make your own? We buy kits but you can use any edible material. Last year we did the ginger train! This year we may try the ginger mini village so all the kids can do their own mini house.
