Where Do You Have a Supervised Visit?

Hey All,
For those of you whose children have supervised visits with a bio parent, where does the supervised visit happen?

My five year old is going to have a visit with her biological mom (my sister) soon. It will be the first time in over two years that they will see each other. I will be there and my mom will also come along. We don't need to meet at a safe house and will be supervising independently. I'd like to meet somewhere public and neutral. It will be a short visit, not more than an hour. I'd like to come up with somewhere where my kiddo can actually visit with her mom (and where she's not totally distracted or uncomfortable). If it were summer, I'd just meet at a play park, but right now it's very wet and rainy and it will be wet and rainy for the next 7 months. So. Do you have any ideas?

TIA

I second the library! Lots of reading and indoor voices. My library also has rooms you can go into with chairs and a table if you want somewhere to speak more privately.

What about the library, and have 'your' DD pick out a few favorite books before the bio mom appears. The kids area is loaded with comfy areas to read and interactive computer games. And if it is going really well, you can peruse books on your own. It's not too distracting of a place to sit.

A McDonald's with a play area. This way you can get snacks for everyone and she can play, hopefully with her Mom. I would take a timer along, set it for 50 minutes, explain to her when the timer goes off you will be leaving in 10 minutes.

Good luck I hope all goes well.

I think the library is an excellent choice. It will be nice for bio-mom to read to her and put together puzzles and such. Sometimes those visits can be awkward with not much to talk about.

That way if DD is not interested in bio-mom she can at least hear her voice from the story she reads her.

Best wishes.

How about a museum? They are great places to make memories but also give people a chance to walk leisurely and talk or do activities together.

I would find a public place, like a park where they have something to interact with/do. If it's cold, look for an indoor something, like a rec center or open gym or even the library.

Our child welfare department always has supervised visits at McDonald's. They sit by themselves and let the parents visit without interference.

One of the main reasons to do this is the parents and the child have often had little contact with each other and they need something to help fill the time.

By having that playground they don't sit and stare off into space with nothing to do or talk about.

You should expect to pay for whatever the child eats and drinks, the mom may not have any money for extra's.

ETA:

Everyone is assuming the bio mom can read...and that she can read fluently out loud. It is often not the case even if someone can read well quietly, that does not mean a mom can read well out loud.

I think a public place where the child can play and run around is the best choice. The mom can play on the equipment with the child or simply sit and watch her child moving and playing. They don't have to sit and talk the whole time nor do they have to be in constant contact for it to be a successful visit.

If you choose an indoor McDonald's type thing, make sure you make a purchase for yourself when you get there at the appointed time - and keep it, especially if bio doesn't show up. This is your documentation that you were there and available.

And bio should have funds to pay for something for the child - that's what they would have to do for themselves....

Some malls have play areas for the kiddos. There are always places like McDonalds or Chic-Fil-A that have indoor play areas. But if you want them to have time, maybe a kids museum or something like that.

Chick-fil-A or a mall play area?

Do you have a pizza parlor with a play area for kids? Or a fast food restaurant with the same? Maybe a Chuck E. Cheese or other play place for kids.

Hope the visit goes well.

You could try a library, or a bookstore with a fun kids section. Then your daughter could play a little, or her bio mom could read books to her. You could try a coffee shop. My daughter lives going and getting a hot chocolate and a donut. You could try one of those activity places that have a drop in play time. There are inflatable bounce places, trampoline places, etc. I would probably choose someplace where you can eat. If they are eating, it gives them something to do together and it might not be as awkward.

Do you have a mall or favorite place where she could talk more loudly than the library and see things she likes to talk about? Or a fast food restaurant if not?
