You could go to San Antonio!
They have a wonderful zoo you can visit there.
Google.com San Antonio attractions.
Goodluck!
I hear Hot Springs Arkansas is really nice, and the drive should be pretty -- lots of pine forests, I'd imagine.
Good luck!

New Braunfles with Schlitterhbahn and the good food. You can bring your own ice chest with your own drinks and sandwiches into Schlitterbahn. There are plenty of hotels/motels there too.
corpus christi, galveton, san antonio
I just discovered Jellystone Park. Website is lonestarcomping.com. You can camp in tents, rvs or in cabins there. Not very expensive but lots of fun! It is only about 35 miles outside of Houston in Waller.
For a day trip or camping go to Brazos Bend State Park. It's about an hours drive from Houston and spectacular. Take bikes or just walk around the lakes. San Antonio and Austin can be very educational. The missions are great and the state capital is good too, make sure to stop at the Texas Museum. Not sure of the name but is in Austin and close to the capital.
south padre island or pensacola fl... both good beaches w/in driving distance (7-8 hr trip) - have reasonable condo prices.
Are you with or without children? How many people? How long do you want to be gone? Not costing too much could be a matter of driving for a certain number of hours (with scenery) and stopping to sleep at a hotel/motel/inn and then returning. Are you trying to get away to think and regroup or take an eventful vacation?
Easy! San Antonio or Austin.
try going to a state park, camping out...we went to Doublelake Recreation Area and camped out for the weekend, there are nature trails, bike trails and even the older kids loved it, we even went in the lake swimming. It's located in Coldspring there is also Wolf Creek just on the other side of Coldspring on Lake Livingston...not very expensive and everyday was a pinic. or a weekend stay in Galveston...visit Stitterbahn and the rain forest cafe, with the under cave water ride thru the rainforest..I have 6 grandkids and that my cheapest way out...and we all had a great time!
