Taos would be nice. It's off season, and there are plenty of good places to go for long walks for in-depth discussions.
I think my husband and I need a couple days of quiet time alone together to figure some stuff out. I have family in Amarillo that I can leave the kids with for a few days. And very little money. So, my question is where can we go, in July, that will be relaxing, scenic, not too hot, and very inexpensive? Not a romantic weekend in a hotel. More of a "lock those 2 in a room until they come out friends" type deal. Yes, romance would be lovely, but I dont want to take a vacation from our issues, I want to face them. I'm picturing maybe an old dusty cabin in a meadow in New Mexico, maybe it's cheaper now in the off season? It's too hot to camp. Maybe I could rent someones timeshare. I know we need our own space. I dont think a hotel would be a good idea. Any thoughts?
Great ideas! Keep em coming. I'm seeing a lot of great places in the $100 a night range at Taos and Ruidosa. Santa Fe is way over priced. Palo Duro Canyon is gorgeous, but, hes working in a canyon, living out of a little cabin right now, so, that wont be any type of getaway for him.

There is a volcano in Des Moines, NM. Never been, but we're planning on stopping by on our way to Colorado in August. Seems different than norm, and a little romantic?
Mountains and cabins in Ruidoso, NM southwest of Roswell. Palo Duro Canyon in Canyon, TX near Amarillo for cabin rentals. Or google as we are not sure what you have in mind. Find a place off the beaten track and stay at an older or quaint motel for a day or two.
Good luck and let us know what you come up with.

PS Things I can think of may cost more than your finances.
not sure how close to Amarillo it is but there is a bed & breakfast ranch in Bandera TX.. it is very nice has an olympic size swim pool, horseback riding, they do bonfires (not so much summer), they do a cowboy breakfast by campfire.. includes all 3 meals plus they leave snacks out all day, they have a lodge that has pool table, books, games awesome place we had a blast my kids are teenagers and they even liked it.. It's called Silverspur ranch..
That whole region will be hot this time a year...Hot but dry, especially panhandle tx, so that will help. I second Palo Duro canyon - beautiful place for hiking, a famous outdoor play, middle of nowhere - Canyon TX hotels will be very affordable. If you've never been to Santa Fe, it's worth going, very romantic, but may be a bit expensive (although you can probably find a cheap hotel slightly out of town). If you want some place to cool down, consider Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico.
