My sister and I are taking my mom to Vegas for her 70th birthday, but we want a place to stay in the center of everything but not too pricey. any suggestions? Also, where do you find great deals on flights?

What can I do next?

Hi, We stayed at The Excalibur on the strip it was great, we took our elderly in laws and they loved it. We also went to grand canyon and hoover dam , and we did the Grand Canyon railway train... http://www.thetrain.com/..... this was a great hit... we stayed at the hotel there in Williams got the train the next day to the grand canyon then stayed at a lodge there then next day got the train back to Williams. They still talk about how much they enjoyed that trip and they never thought that they would do something like that at their time of life !!! and that was 3 years ago now... you can plan it all on-line we did it through Expedia. or just do it all direct on the websites.. good luck x

My husband and I just went in July and stayed at the MGM Grand. It is a huge hotel, closer to the end of the strip, but it was very nice. We booked our reservations through US Airways Vacation and it cost for the two of us less than $1000 for airfare and hotel & show tickets. Some of the hotels that are more in the middle of the strip include the Bellagio, Cesars Palace, the Flaminigo, Bally's, Paris. HOwever, there is a monorail that runs from the MGM all the way down to the Sahara that is really reasonable in price. Just realize that there is a lot of walking regardless of what you do. The hotels do offer free valet if you get a car. Hope that helps. I have a wonderful time - we certainly did.

My husband & I went in February; we booked through Expedia; flew American Airlines and stayed at Bally's.
Check out all the online booking sites - Expedia, Hotline, Priceline, Travelocity, Orbitz. They usually have pretty much the same offers but sometimes you'll come across something different. You will usually come out better by booking your flight and your hotel together. I checked booking separately but could never beat the package prices. You can also check with a travel agent and see if they have any special deals. The online sites will also give you ratings on the hotels and you can get a map to show you where everything is.

We are going in a couple of weeks and we got rooms at the Paris for $60 - $70 a night. We are members at the Paris so we got lower rates but, you can join for free after you get there. All the hotels offer it and so if you go back you can negotiate lower rates and upgrades. No matter where you stay, when you get there, be sure and tell them it is your mother's 70th birthday. They always give us great upgrades with great rooms, even got a huge suite in the Paris that overlooked the Bellagio and the entire strip. It was like an apt. Right now they are hurting in Las Vegas and if you find a low rate at a hotel but, want to stay somewhere else, just tell them what rate you were quoted and I bet they will work with you. I prefer staying in the Paris, Bellagio, Bally area as it is close to the monorail and all the action. We have stayed at the Wynn (got good rates there, too and an upgrade) but, it is too far down the strip and we had to cab it everywhere. The new Trump Encore is down by the Wynn ad supposedly they are offering good rates. Just remember - don't be afraid to negotiate. We called directly to the hotels (800 #'s)and did not go through the online (cheaphotels.com, expedia.com, etc.) because we felt like we could bargain with them talking to them directly. Good luck and have a great time. I agree with going to Hoover Dam if you have time. They have tours that will take you and it is only about 45minutes - 1 hour away. We used air miles so it only cost us $5 a person for our flight but, I would go to one of the online travel dot coms and check out the rates. Sometimes it works out especially if you book a month ahead and sometimes you get the same or better rates by googling what airlines fly to Las Vegas and check out their rates but, they usually will go up if you don't book a month ahead of time. Beware of lay overs and connections. It makes for a long trip but, if you get a good rate, it probably is worth it.

I did the same for my mothers 70th. She had a great time. I also booked a trip to the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam while we were there. Those trips were made by bus and you can book them all on line where you can get the prices and locations of all of the hotels in the area. We stayed at the Statosphere it was a unique hotel but we did wish it was a little closer to the strip. I also booked some shows which she loved.
