Wide Elastic Waist Bands on Maternity Pants

Hello,

I remember my old frustration with some of my favorite maternity pants that had under-the-belly wide elastic bands that roll when you wash your pants and never seem to lay straight again without curling over or twisting. I notice that they are all stitched into the back seam. Any ideas for keeping them laying flat even after washing? I was thinking of stretching and pinning and adding a seam or stitch on the sides to kind of remind the elastic to stay flat. Has anyone tried that or anything else? I always like those pants but hate fighting with the waist all day or at least every time I wash them.

(Wow. Wrong "waist" there at the end--what am embarrassing typo!)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'm going to try the staggered stitches. I got some pants from someone second-hand and they are sooo comfortable and look great for work, so I am determined. I like the waists but not the curling, and am trying to avoid too many new/full-price maternity things this time around. Thanks for the ideas! (I did like my full-panel Motherhood pants and just bought some as capris, but still way too baggy.)

I hated that also. so frustrating. I put stitches through the waistband, alternating between top, middle and bottom. I think the stitches were about 1/2 inch apart. I did not have a machine to run stitches in the whole waistband. It worked really well. When taking out of th edryer, sometimes if the stitch was at the top, it would fold up at the bottom but stretching the waist fixed it right away. The stiches were like this:

I never did like the elastic waist band maternity pants. I'm small framed and I couldn't find any to fit well enough to be comfortable. I hope someone has some good ideas for you.
I found pants that had adjustable tracks, kind of like zippers, on the sides. The pants were made in such a way that the tracks weren't visible and the pants had pockets. Plus, I could find them in size 4 and just let the belly out as my tummy grew. I liked them SO much better!

Just a thought, but have you tried washing your pants inside out? It's worth a try.

Best wishes!

My favorite maternity jeans were from the gap and sat below the waist. A long tank top or a belly band kept me covered.
