ok so I have been through tubes with my first son thought I knew what to expect. but my youngest has caught me off guard. I realize the fluid delays thier speech till the tubes start working. I realize my son is behind on speech. My oldest got his tubes his speech went up alost immediately but it was like baba or puppy or simple words ball etc. Now my youngest I didnt see an immediate improvement with his tubes he just still babbled. His ears have drained alot in the last 3 weeks. I consider this normal. I am just now seeing the speech go up but heres the wierd thing. He isn't saying simple words like doggy kitty ball mama or anything. His words are" ritght there" "daddy gone" "cookie" "whos there" "hello" its like he skipped the simple combinations and went straight to the hard words. and they are understandable. Has anyone else seen this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thanks for all of the input. he is starting to repeat small words now. I told the dog to sit the other day and he was like sit sit sit. it just threw me it was complicated words insteaad of small words or fragmented words. his ears quit draining and now he just thows two word phrases which threw me. i expected the normal thing. but in the last 3 days he has started throwing the simple words like I expected to hear. since he is doing multiple words and they come out clear instead of giving him a single word like milk I use "do you want some milk" instead of arms up I use "put your arms up" I figure hes comprehending it to a degree just being lazy and not excercising it. if he can start with 2 word sentences i am not shortening my sentences now. And the girl that sent me the speech chart it helped alot.

Hello! I'm so happy for you! I'm a speech pathologist and I love hearing stories like this- it actually means he was still progressing with his receptive language- or what he could understand- even though his expressive language wasn't quite where it needed to be yet! Are there any words that you feel he missed that you would like him to say to help him communicate? If so, lot's of modeling of those words in various situations will help him along. You can add them to what he is already saying (which is a strategy called expanding.) For example, if the word "ball" is not in his expressive vocabulary yet- and it is a word you would like him to say- then when he is playing with it you could model "go ball"! Or if he says the word "roll" while playing with the ball you could expand with "roll ball".

Btw- what is his age? And is he getting frustrated with communication at all?

Good luck and have fun with your language developing kids!
feel free to email on this site if you want. :-)

I had a student once who told me that her brother's first words, at age three, were "May I please have a glass of grape juice?" Her parents nearly fainted. They thought he was deaf. Turned out he was just waiting until he was good and ready to say something. So while it's not the most common thing in the world, it does happen.

Hi D.,
My nephew went from barely speaking, to speaking in complete 5 to 7 word sentences in one week.

Different children have different language skills: maybe your second is naturally a bit better at language?? Maybe, since you knew what to expect, you have some natural skills at helping a child pick up language??

I'm the youngest of 3, and have been told I didn't bother with O. or two word phrases....my brothers (7 and 9 years older) were leaving the house to meet friends on the street and I yelled "Get back here and take me with you!" My mother couldn't believe it! LOL

This does happen quite frequently. Your youngest has been listening to these words for some time but just couldn't say them or you could not understand what he was saying at the time. With his ears draining so well he is able to understand everything which is great. He will go back to those little words in time, so give him that time. These new words are just as you say "new" so hes' trying them out for the first time. Its' great that he has tuned in so quickly. This happened to my youngest child, not a baby anymore but none the less. There were so many words that you couldn't quite clearly understand but once the surgery was done he came up with words that just amazed me. He did go back to his little words with no encouragement, all on his own. I think it is fantastic what can be done today with medical practice and I do wish you all the best with your sons' speech. He has probably missed out on so much he wants to say all the words he can now. Now there is no need to worry about speech therapy or anything along that line. He is a healthy little boy and thats' what means so much!!

Yes! My youngest son got his tubes at 16 months, and immediately started using phrases we didn't expect to see for another few months, based on his previous language development! We were amazed, but very thrilled!
