Ds#2 is a January baby. I'm looking for places to host his first birthday party. It would have to be an indoor venue with room for about 30 ppl and some sort of activity for the kids about 20 kids (ds has 12 cousins), and baby friendly so he could crawl if he wanted to.

It's really not about baby at all, just a party with baby having his 15 minutes of fame.

We hosted ds#1s first three birthdays at home. Each still cost us around $300 and we had to do all the prep and clean up.

One venue we are considering is nunleys carousel at the cradle of aviation. Not having much luck with our friend Google.

Thanks
F. B.

Is there a children's museum in your area? We have several. A lot of museums increase income by hosting small parties. Our local environmental center has a small museum, a playground and an outdoor zoo for injured and rehabbing animals. They also provide small programs with a speaker and a few small animals. There's an enclosed area where a small child could crawl around. Maybe a few phone calls would get you some answers, or even referrals if the first few places don't do it.

Good luck. Otherwise I'd do something at home, scale back the food/decor (after all, he's only 1), and hire a couple of teens to help put stuff out, collect used paper goods, and take out the trash.

What about a local hotel with a conference or banquet room? All the kids would stay in that room, not run around the hotel. You could just get pizzas delivered or have the hotel provide kid friendly food. Hire a magician and/or a balloon artist to entertain the kids while the adults visit. No winter weather worries, and no worries about trying to keep track of the kids. Just keep the party to about 2 hours, and you won't have to do any clean-up.

Portland has a couple of places that cater to parents with kids. The large one has an indoor play area with lots of things to do for all ages.

The one I take my grandchildren to would be too small for your group. The play area is geared for children 5 and under. They do have parties that can include several adults.

I think you could find something similar in such a heavily populated area. Play Cafe, the one we go to, is syndicated. Combo play areas that provide food are popular now.

I researched using "combo play space in Queens, that serve food" and received Web addresses for several. The first one I opened is named Mary Poppins. It said they know of 13 places.

What about ice skating? The kids would have fun. Or an indoor arcade of some sort. Are all the guests from Queens? Could you venture out on the Island and go to Chucky Cheese?
