Yard Sale - Pembina,ND

So, the garage is packed full of junk for the yard sale. We had one in July, made a couple of hundred bucks, packed up the leftovers and continued adding to it all summer with the intention of having another in the fall. Anyway, my husband wants the garage cleaned out tomorrow.

Most of September here has been kind of cold and gloomy. Tomorrow is going to be the first warm sunny day we've had in a while, and it could be the last. I would really rather take the boys up to visit the snake pits to see all the garter snakes that are returning to their winter dens. We go and visit the snake pits every year, either during spring or fall migration, and haven't had a chance yet this year.

I would like to just donate the stuff, and get it over with, be another part of me is saying I have to try to sell some of it because we just bought a new van, blah, blah, blah...

What would you do?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the advice!

I would love for my husband to have the yard sale, but he is going to be working overtime tomorrow.

It's about an hours drive to the snake pits. I like to get there at lunch time, have a picnic, then go see the dens. It is about a three kilometer hike, and we like to spend a couple of hours catching snakes.

I can't do Sunday because I have a bridal shower. It is more fun on sunny days because the snakes all come out to sun themselves.

We are mostly debt free, but I still feel like I need to make an effort to make some money off the stuff. I think I will put the really good stuff on Kijiji to sell, then donate the rest.

I guess I better get back to the garage!

I spent the afternoon going through the boxes. I took four boxes to Goodwill, I freecycled five boxes, put a box of toys together to take to work at the Y, and only kept three boxes to put on Kijiji. Now to pack the picnic lunches so we can head out to the snake pits!

Are you debt free?

If no, have the yard sale. I go through the same back and forth each time, and I never regret having the yard sale (we still have student loan debt). You can donate till the cows come home when you don't owe money to lenders.

*to be clear, I am a HUGE fan of giving. But you need to live like no one else now, (ie deal w the pain of having the yard sale) so later you can give like no one else.
Signed, Dave Ramsey. OK, not really, this is S.. But you get the idea.

Have the yard sale tomorrow, and visit the pits on Sunday. You can always bundle up a bit to visit the snakes (which sounds so awesome, btw) and have the better of the two days for the sale, which is when most people will be out and about. Have a fun weekend!

I think it really depends on your financial situation and how much time you actually get to spend with your kids. My daughter always comes first but sometimes you need that money to take care of them.

Yard sales usually start early, so I would go ahead with the sale, end at say 3:00 and then go see the snakes - YUK!!!!!

Snake pits? *shudder*

I love having garage sales, I think they are so much fun. I'd do the sale! Have your kids pitch in, my girls had a lot of fun when we had one.

I would do both.

Garage sales here start early. And once you feel like you've sold enough - close up shop, donate all the stuff and then go to the snake pits.

If the snake pits are open on Sunday - go then after church (if you go to church) and make a day of it.

I'd wait another week - you haven't advertised for a yard sale, so go ahead and do something fun. If you've been filling up the garage all this time, why does your husband suddenly want it cleaned out right away? Run an ad now on Cragslist for next week, and have your husband wait a week. Even if you call someone to come pick it up, they aren't going to come until next week anyway. Sell what you can next weekend, and then take the rest to a consignment shop - even if you have to wait to get paid, you'll get something and the garage will be clean.

Donate it! Let other people less fortunate enjoy it and you can have the best of both worlds--Go see the snakes!

I forgot to add : Freecycle is a great place to give your stuff and I really love that if I choose, depending on how you set up pick-up, you can meet the person getting the item etc. I love hearing about family situations and how they used the item I had sitting around for a year etc. Like last week, I got an email from a single mom who I gave some of my newborn baby clothes too. She was so appreciative and sent me a pic of her daughter in one of the dresses. Giving back feels so awesome and when you see how much it helps someone it makes you want to do it over and over and over again. Good luck with your decision.

I have the same sort of feelings. I've been a collector and have lots of stuff that I want to get rid of. I have had a couple of garage sales and like you only netted a couple of hundred dollars for hours of work. I've decided having a garage sale just isn't worth it. I called a local charity who came with a truck and took a load of stuff away. I still feel guilty about my decision, tho, I'm glad I did it.

I'm struggling to continue getting rid of stuff thru donations. Intellectually I know it's best to donate but emotionally I feel that I'm wasting money.
For me it's an emotional issue to work thru.

I believe it's better use of my time to spend it with my grandchildren and in getting my house back to being more liveable. I suggest that your reasons for not having the sale are good ones. I made a conscious decision to go with my mind instead of my emotions.

Do the Sale. Giving the clothes to a thrift store does not help the needy. The needy shop at Macys and the workign poor (like me) shop thrift.

I 'd have a yard sale. I'd start today posting some items on Craigslist. Do maybe 7-12 yard sale outside. I'd post on Craigslist during the yard sale too. Donate the leftovers. Off to snakes pits. If thats doable distance and time wise.

So I vote for e-yard sale and actual yard sale combo.

I had a large amount of baby/toddler stuff. I took pictures, posted it on facebook as for sale as one big lot, listed the price and one person came and bought it all. If you can do that, go for it. It's much faster and easier. Then donate what doesn't sell.

Even if you can sell bunches of stuff to several people, it beats sitting out for hours hoping to make some money.
