Yellowstone Battle of Bugs

I keep reading and hearing that you need 100% deet in yellowstone. I believe it because the bugs were attacking us at bryce canyon lol. Problem is I can't find it anywhere. Where do you get 100% deet or 100% citronella or whatever it is that is supposed to be healthier for kids. It's not at the local stores. Is there anyone who has actually bought it that can tell me exactly where? Anyone who knows more about getting something that is like having 100% deet? I know the off deep woods is a joke for bug areas like up north since it barely worked at bryce canyon.

So What Happened?

Good idea, who would know better than their own rangers :)

Lol Min, we aren't leaving for a few weeks either

Thanks mommas, I am stubborn on pants and long sleeves in the summer but it's better than biting deer flies and mosquitoes.

Thanks JulieBean, I already have the website though :)

We don't wear that much nylon, but I'll keep it in mind (deet can melt nylon)
I actually saw the repel (sue) on the bass pro shop site. Hopefully there's one nearby.
Thanks for all the help :)

Maybe call Yellowstone and ask them? And what the Rangers themselves, use??? ?

Or try their website.

SH has a great idea! Ask what Yellowstone staff use. I like the bugbands spray. It is made with geranium oil and you are not spraying yourself and your kids with pesticides (DEET, ....)

Who knows in 20 yrs. what DEET does to you????
What happens when you inhale DEET into your lungs??? scary.

We use bugband in TX, and when we visit family in Michigan (where the mosquitoes are the size of small birds) and it works fine.

What others have said: long sleeves and spray your clothes(before putting them on), that way you can minimize absorption through the skin. Only put the deet directly on exposed skin. Get a spray for the clothes and liquid for the skin, that way you avoid standing in a cloud of deet. I have seen 100% Deet at REI in the insect repellent section.
Also consider having a circular scarf or at least a bandana for everyone to protect your ears/necks. And don't forget the Benadryl stick or spray...
Good luck and have fun.

There's a product called Repel 100 that is 100% DEET. The higher the percentage, the longer it works. 100% is supposed to work for 12 hours. So, if you had 30 -50% DEET, you would just need to reapply it more often. This is the concentration recommended.

From your description of the bug problem you are in, this is not the time to be using some unproven "alternative" to DEET which has been proven safe and effective since 1940.

We went to Yellowstone last August for a week, and took "OFF" unscented Bug repellant with us and it worked great! I seem to always be the one that gets bit and whenever I used the stuff, I didn't. I would keep a small can in our backpack, but I also carried their "towlettes" in my purse, for those times when I didn't have a backpack. Highly recommend it. You can find "OFF" at most stores.

Wear long sleeves and long pants.
Spray your clothes
Eat garlic and bananas
Use garlic oil around your campsite
Citronella bands for the wrists, but they can still irritate, put them on the outside sleeves
Sit in the smoke of the campfire
Get bug hats at the fishing stores-hats with nets in the front

Good luck and have fun anyway.
