15-Month Old Waking in Night

Hi! My 15-month old has started waking up several times at night and crying. We try to leave her to settle back down on her own, but at least one of the times she has been crying so long that I end up going into her room and sleeping with her in a chair. I say "sleeping" but I don't get any sleep because she moves almost constantly. I think she probably isn't comfortable sleeping with me in the chair but if I try putting her back into her crib she starts crying all over again and doesn't stop anytime soon. She still takes 2 naps a day but she seems to need them so I don't want to give them up prematurely. Does anyone have any ideas? She had been sleeping through the night since she was 6 months old and I'm missing those days!

Try Tylenol - she may be in pain from teeth or an ear infection. For ear infections, my kids never showed any other symptom than the middle of the night crying. I always thought it was behavioral at first and then felt really guillty.

Unfortunately, you are also at the age where a lot of babies adjust their sleep behavior. It may jus tbe a matter of putting her to sleep earlier or later. Kids this age also start being anxious, and if she wakes up and you aren't there, she may be very upset. I would do your best to reassure her without picking her up everytime she cries. Try cracking hte door so she can see out a little. It shall pass, just stick to routine and consistancy. And yes, she may be getting ready ot lose the two naps. My 17 month old is almost ready for one I think (darn!).

But look for sources of pain too. SOmetimes it is the lying down tha tbrings on pressure in the head/sinuses/eustaian tubes (sp?).

I have to say lol to this because my son did the same thing, and I remember that pain. We got no sleep for the first year of his life, and that includes myself, my husband and our son. We were all miserable and exhausted. At his one year appointment they let us know we had to let him cry it out. By going and picking him up and trying to rock him or do whatever we could to calm him down we were only reenforcing the behavior. It was like he knew if he cried we would "reward" him by picking him up and such. It was hard for all of us but after a few nights of struggling he went to bed on his own and did not wake up at all during the night. We were told to calm him by just rubbing him and patting him and saying go to sleep and that everything would be alright but to also get out of the room as quickly as possible, so he would not rely on us. He was only taking one nap by this time, usually a 2 hour nap between 1-3pm, but we would only let him nap 3 hours max because any longer than that would make bedtime rough. He was going to bed as early as 8:30pm and would be woke up around 7:30am the next day but he has recently wanted to stay up later. Good luck and I hope some of this may help!

She might be teething. I also have a good sleeper (17 months old), but he will wake up in the night when he has new teeth coming in. It usually passes in a week max when he's teething.

this is a hard time, most kids go through some separation anxiety, even at night. One trick i learned with our kids was to go to them and offer comfort ("mommy loves you", tummy rub, blanket, pacifier or comfort item) but do not pick her up. this way she can know that you are there and settle back down. If you can leave while she is calm but not yet asleep she will learn to put her self to sleep. hope this helps you, like it did me, i have 4 great sleepers.
