3 Week Old Son's Bellybutton Bleeding?

My son is 3 weeks tomorrow, his cord just fell off Thursday last week. Now his belly button has been bleeding a bit - not all the time, but it leaves some blood on his clothes, and there's always dried blood in the bellybutton when I look at it, is this normal? Is there something that I can do to prevent it? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Not sure what everyone else has said... but if it is just tiny bit and only leaving a little bit here and there on the clothes and dried on the belly button (so it is not dripping out like a cut that bleeds) it just means that it isn't all they way dried out yet. this happened with 2 out of 3 of my kids and my doctor said to just wipe it out with alcohol wipes each diaper change. You can also use a q-tip dipped in alcohol. the alcohol will help it to dry out. With doing that it will dry up soon.
however if it is more that just minimal ask your doctor (you can always call teh doctor on call or nurse and ask them so you don't have to make a trip in)

I would just put in a call to your doctor's office and ask the nurse. The nurse line is perfect for situations like this where you don't really know if you need to bring him in. My son's never did that, it took forever to fal off but once it did, it just looked like fresh skin, a little pink, but no bleeding.

May've been disrupted by the diaper/scabbing etc.. you just need to give it a GOOD layer of vaseline to keep it moist and protected so it won't be dry and rubbing against clothing/diaper ;)

My DD had the same thing happen. It eventually stopped with no problems.

i agree - call your dr just in case. but i think a little bleeding is okay (both of my daughters had some). if you're breast feeding you can put a few drops of your milk in the belly button. this helps with healing and preventing infection. take care!

Call your doc. It may be an open vessel? that won't heal/close up. This happened to my daughter. Her belly button wouldn't heal, they tried a few different things but then the doctor had to cauterize her belly button. She screamed when it happened, I felt terrible, but now she is two and her belly button looks great!
