6 Mo. Old with Cracked Lip

My 6 mo. old baby boy has a cracked upper lip that will not heal. At least once a day it cracks open and bleeds. We run a humidifier in his room at night. I have been putting vaseline on it whenever he sleeps but it will not stay on during the day because he is constantly drooling and mouthing toys. I have been trying Burt's Beeswax during the day but it is hard to get on his lips. I'm calling the pedetrician tomorrow but wandered if any of you had suggestions. Thanks in advance for any help!

What can I do next?

Hi, B.! We always use Aquaphor, and it seems to work really well. I have even used the Lansinoh (for cracked and dry skin from breast feeding), and that's a miracle worker! It's thicker too, so it may stay on better. I would continue to lube him all all day long, especially with the drooling. The drooling will probably just make it worse. It will be a pain to stay on top of it, but after a day or two, it should be much better. Good luck and happy new year!

if you are nursing, you most likely have lansinoh nipple cream around. i wound apply that on his lips - if it can heal cracked nips, it can heal lip skin.

Try bag balm it is a old remedy for such things and has pretty good staying power. It comes in a green can with a cow and clovers on it and is used for cows teets to keep them from cracking and being sore it is antiseptic and really works well.My medicine cabinet wouldn't be complete without a can. Many drug stores carry it and if you can't find it there go to a farm store like tractor supply. Our family has used it long before I was born in 1960. I believe they used it on my Dad back in the 40's .
Also you might try to get a bit more water into his diet.

Try Aquaphor ointment by Eucerin. I would keep very thin layers by day, and a bit more during the nightime. Maybe reapply when he is asleep.

Good luck and Happy New year!

Hello B.! There is only one product I used for my children...aquaphor!! I used it on my children's lips, cheeks, bottoms, ouches etc. when they were babies. They are 5 and 2 and I still am using it on them and myself!! I would definitely try it and keep it around the house for the future. I can't have enough laying around. :) Hope this helps!

Are you breastfeeding? I'd put PurLan on/around my nipple so that it transfers to his lips.

Try the All Natural Chapstick- dry babies lip first, then apply. Warming it with your arm or hand may help it go on easier.

This may be surprising to you but the same lanolin breastcream for cracked nipples is EXCELLENT for chapped and cracked lips. I use it nightly and have seen such an improvement over chapstick.

I sing the praises of Aquafore for things like this. It is good for so many things - I call it magic cream. Give it a try!

BeautiControl has a great lip balm. No alcohol like petroleum based products. It is rich in Vit. C and Wheat germ oil so it is very healing. It would be easy to apply to your baby's lip area because it comes in a little jar and you use your finger to apply. My children all use the lip balm. Great product for the entire family. Contact me today for information on how to get this product and I will offer 20% discount on first order. Hope to hear from you soon!

I didn't read any of the other responses so someone may have already said this...vaseline actually isn't that good to use. It actually causes your skin, lips, wherever your using it to need it more. I heard this awhile back so I can't give the exact reasoning but somehow it makes the skin dry out and then you have to keep using it more. Just chapstick does the same thing, if you watch people who use chapstick they use it constantly because it's actually more drying in the long run. I used vaseline on my lips as well and after I heard that I stopped using it and could tell a difference. I use Burts Bees lip balm now, all natural is what you want to use. I use it at bedtime and that's it whereas before my lips felt constantly dry and I'd have to keep putting on more vaseline.

Lanolin works great and it is safe for the baby's mouth.

Dear B.,
I would purchase Caledula. I buy it from a chiropractor but you can buy it on line probably. L. J

We just went through the same thing with our 14mo. Her lips would get stuck to her sheets while she slept and then she'd move and break them open and she'd bleed all night. It was awful. The only thing we did that you aren't doing yet is take a long steam shower with her before putting her to bed. That would soften her lips and we'd grease them up good before bed, sometimes sneak in before we went to bed to reapply (which didn't always work since she sleeps on her tummy most of the time). Hers were so cracked and swollen she couldn't smile (on Christmas!) but by doing all those things you're doing and the shower, they're almost 100% again.
