What do they all mean? I've been able to figure out if people are talking about their husbands or children, but what do they all mean!? I've seen DH and DS and DD - hmm, there are others, but I can't remember any others. I feel like I missed an important day of school sometimes when I read posts. :)

Thanks!

All the acronyms do get a little confusing. I'm not positive but I believe...
DH is dear husband
DS is dear son
DD is dear daughter

Now I'm gonna feel pretty dumb if I'm wrong but I think that is right!

Who refers to their husbands and children as "dear." I never would have guessed that one. I think my husband would think he walked into the wrong house if I refered to him as that. Thanks for asking the question

Great question! It doesn't help that so many people use "textese" (typing as though they are sending a text message) when writing. My niece's do that to me all the time & I just tell them that I read & speak in English - not some sort of wierd, no vowel using shorthand. Half the time I just guess & hope I got it right :-)

I agree with Danielle. So many people use text typing, I've been guilty a few times myself. I would prefer to see it all spelled out than to try and figure out what the "symbols" mean. Sometimes I skip posts because my brain starts to hurt figuring it out. Also, if I can't figure out their shorthand I must not have a helpful answer since I don't know what they're talking about. You didn't miss an important day of school, I wonder if the younger generation is schooled right with all the spelling errors.

Hi C.,

Good question. I'm sure it took most of us awhile to figure it all out. All the ones I can think of have been addressed by the knowledgable ladies below.

Not sure about DDS. DSD and DSS are darling step-daughter and step-son. I've also seen people put things like ODD or ODS which I think is for Oldest or something... you didn't miss a day of school... I think some folks make these up as we go along :-)

So funny! I have the same problem, and thought their must be some page on here with an acronym code or something crazy like that, but I guess they just get made up as time goes on.

These acronyms are not so much text message shorthand but they are used a lot on parent/kid style chat forums. The one I post on regularly uses all of these since to type out husband, older son, younger son, daughter, Stay at home mom, etc. multiple time every time you sit down to respond to someones post takes a lot of time. I was actually surprized that there was no "shorthand" link when I joined here like there was on the forum I post in. I have to keep myself in check to write out the words instead of use the shorthand.

Hi!

I think the first word is Dear or Darling then Husband, Son and Daughter.

I totally know what you mean, it took me a while to become hip to the acronyms too. :-)
