can someone please break down the "codes" on mamapedia?
I know SAHM = stay at home mom
MIL = mother in law
FIL - father in law

what does DD mean? or.....all the others? Sometimes I read peoples blogs and have no idea what they are talking about.

What can I do next?

I guess it's a sign of the times. I don't know. I always type things out.
I know two many kids who have spelling issues because they type in text lingo. I have friends who are teachers and you'd faint if you knew how many kids don't know the difference between to, two, and too. They just type or write 2. U for you.
My son doesn't even want to go there with me because I don't find it very cute. Kids actually turn their homework in like that.
I realize this is an adult site and some abbreviations are fine. I have figured out most of them.
One of the funniest, (well not funny due to the situation) responses was from a mom answering a post about someone who was hiding from her DH and had restraining orders, etc.
She said, "I think you can quit referring to him as your darling husband now."

It's not like I can't figure most things out by context, but there have been a few things I have no idea what the person was talking about. I understand taking short cuts for the sake of time, etc, but I prefer the beauty of the written word, spelled in it's entirety.

Just my opinion.

To people who hate acronyms, txt, initials, and similar... never join or marry into the military!!! I grew up with BDUs, MREs, PX, XO, CO, NCO,EOD, UDT, ATC, MOS, etc.. The military, more than any other organization had been known for it's simplifying of names for decades. So much so... I bet you know what Sgt & Capt translate into. So for those who hate shorthand. Don't touch the military with a 10' pole.

Nor for that matter, take up egyptology. Nor secretarial work. Nor mathmatics. Nor Real Estate. Nor restaurant work. Nor, nor, nor.

People have been using various forms of shorthand (removing vowels being the most basic) for thousands of years. No one's doing anything special or new here.

What I DO wish is that Mamapedia would publish a list, because there are about 40-50 in common usage. From the basic LOL = laugh out loud & smilees :)... to the "parenting site specific". WM on this site means Working Mom, but it means Woman Marine in the USMC. And topsy turvy / upside down on other sites.

There's also some pretty standard variations. SAHM = Stay at home mom, SAHP = stay at home parent... similarly:

Work At Home Parent WAHP
Work At Home Mom WAHM
Work At Home Dad
Working Parent (implying out of the house)
Working Mom (ditto)
etc.

TTC trying to concieve
STBXH Soon To Be eX Husband
XH Ex Husband
STBXW Soon to Be eX Wife
PPL people
CIO cry it out
KWIM know what I mean
HTH hope that helps

I know what your saying. I just wish people would spell out the whole word instead of using these codes. It doesnt take a second to type the whole word out then everybody will know what there talking about:)

I hate the new way people type, text,, whatever,, I don't know what a lot of them mean either, but I always wondered why, if while complaining about your husband you would refer to him as "Dear" , so I was going with "damn" instead,, but now, I think we have a new term for those moments when he is less than "dear". Hi L.,

I just typed in the word abbreviations in the search bar on mamapedia that's located in the upper right corner. Up popped a lot of questions so similar to the one you are asking about. (You can type in a search to see if someones already asked it.)

I hope this will help.

Some people use these because they are texting from their phones.. To type it all out on those tiny buttons can take a while..

Our grandfather lived to be 103. He was a person that never complained about changes and was not afraid of any new technology.
He too learned to surf the web. He liked using these shortcuts, because he said "it saves me the little time I have left".. Hee, hee.. he was 100 when he learned about these.. BTW......

This is the most comprehensive list I have ever seen. Thank goodness we do not use all of these on here. I guess for people that text they would need these. It is like a foreign language.

I had to ask this question about a month ago. Apparently, the first D means darling or dear, and the second letters are D-daughter, S-son, H-husband.

IMO, IMHO in my opinion, in my humble opinion

There are more, I just don't have time for it. I really think it takes longer to hit the shift key and type an abbreviation than it does to just type out the whole word. I do not like abbreviations!

On our adoption site DD means dear daughter, DH dear husband, and so forth. (At least that is my guess.) Does this match the context?

Thanks for asking - you are not alone as you can see from the responses. I thought it was just my age but apparently NOT! Sad when your middle school daughter knows more than you do about this sort of c--p!

I had to LOL (you know that one) at your question - I've been wondering the same thing - I figure it's Darling Husband, but it sounds so...not colloquial to where I live, I guess! I'm curious to read the answers...
