No, because many of those abbreviations are all over the web. Take for instance, the babycenter site. Same abbreviations used :)

Hey, speaking of "Lee" -- whatever happened to Lee P.?
Most newbies have to ask what ETA and DH and some of the other commonly used abbreviations mean on Mamapedia.
Anyone notice that some apparently already know?
Thanks Lee. Well, I guess that just shows how loyal I am to this site. :)

Every time I see ETA I read it as "Estimated Time of Arrival". When I add an edit to a post I just type EDIT: added text here. One extra letter but at least it's not piggy backing on an acronym that's already in use.
I had no clue about these abbreviations when I joined Mamapedia, almost 22 months ago. I googled the first few abbr I came across - DH, DD, DS, etc. Afterwards, I just used common sense and context to figure out what they could mean. Sailing smooth so far! :)
I came on here knowing 1337, adult text shorts, etc. (Ahhhrg... Case in point)... And with a gaming preteen, have learned A LOT more.
That said, this was my first parent site, so TTC (trying to concieve), EBF (exclusively breast feeding), etc were new to me.
One thing that bugs me, though, is that on other sites I use it's
DS7, DD3, etc. so the ages of kids are attached along with their gender. That's soooooo useful! (Ahem, voting we start a trend)
ETA = Edited to add:
LOL - I still like using PITA, too, when necessary - shorthand save some typing!
I think I get DH, DS, DD, but not ETA. I've seen some others I didn't recognize...
Yeah, I am with LeeLee on this most of the people who ask are new to this as a whole, not just this forum. Plus, anyone with half a brain just looks them up on yahoo like I did when I was a newbie 5yrs ago! Part of my personal issue was I am not a big texter so here was my first "taste" of online abbv.
SWH - So What Happened
ETA - Edit To Add
I picked them up when I was babycenter quite some years ago as LeeLee stated they are pretty commonly used over many groups/sites.
I never had to ask. I was able to figure most of the abbreviations on my own without having to. Same with most text speak. If I don't know...I google it. Thought that was pretty normal. :)
Do you ever watch Stephen Colbert? He has a self portrait that goes into inifinity. I think it can drive you mad if you let it pull you in.
I have been watching the site all day. It seems that some newbies know this all to well what they mean... It took me seeing it 100 times to find out what it ment. Uhg why today of all days does this have to happen!
I am semi newer to texting in the last year or two, but have IM'ed a lot and been on other daycare forums for years, etc and these are mostly common abbreviations used web-wide. You can also Google them for easy answers. Most web savvy folks will do that I assume?
Those abbreviations are not used solely on Mamapedia. They are "web words". I have used various internet forums and chats over the last 9 years so I know many. DH is one of the most common ones. If someone asks what that means then most likely they have never used a forum posing site.
Anyway, if I can't figure an abbreviation I check to see if the site I'm using has a "web word key", if not I try Google. If I can't find it there, I then PM someone who seems nice and ask them. :) Being new to a site is not synonymous with being new to the internet. Plus, many people just catch on quickly. HTH (Hope That Helps) :)
Similar to Riley, we use names like ds1 and dd2 to tell you the "place" the kids have in the family, on my other boards. I've been using these since 2001, so none of it is new to me, including TTC and EC, BFing, IYKWIM... Some of the "text speak" was actually a carry over from note-writing in high school for me (b4, etc...).
That said, "dh" can mean a whole host of things, positive (dear) and negative (dastardly).
i always have to ask people what they are. i didnt get ETA at all until I asked
I know ETA means 'edit', but I'm not sure what the letters stand for....
YEP! It took me months to figure out what they meant. Not only 3 days.
Hmmmmm......
I see what you're saying.
Ask
Someone
Special! LOL
well, if you can tell me what SMH is or SWH? That be great. DH isnt that always dear husband or in some cases dumb husband...depending on that time of the month.;)
You can kind of figure ETA. Especially if you really want to edit what you said, and it says real big EDIT.MY ANSWER ;) So technically wouldnt that be EMA?
I guess I am just smarter then average since I caught on quicker then most but then again its probably becasue these abbreviations have been around since the internet started. still looking for a reason to hate a newbie?
