I am no saint, but my 6 year old triplets do not watch that or any shows that are rated TVY and up. TVY is for Youth starting at age 7. They watch Sponge Bob sometimes but even that is too much. We have become such a society that is desensitized to everything that even adults don't realize the problems with these things. Jurassic Park for a 4 year old isn't appropriate to M.. I wouldn't let my 6 year olds watch it because of the violence of graphic scenes with dinos eating people. Why take away from their innocense? It's going to be gone soon enough. My opinion is to keep them innocent for as long as possible. Let them be kids. Romantic comedies? No. Beetle Juice? Naw. Documentaries are different but I would see what's on so I'd watch it with them to explain things like bones and where they come from and why they're there and why they're digging them up. Civil War? Nope. Hubby is a huge Civil War buff but my kids don't need to see the dead bodies on the battle field, especially since their father has been to battle himself.
I have parent controls on our TVs. There are guidelines for a reason. J. because something says PG doesn't mean that as long as you're sitting there a 4 year old can watch it. It's reasonable to say the PG is for older children, especially if you look at where PG is on the ratings scale. I don't think it's a good idea to desensitize our children. Things should be shocking to a young children, not an every day occurrence of "Hey look, another dead body." It may seem like your 4 year old has it all figured out, but she doesn't. She's coming to her own conclusions of what's she's watching, a 4 year old conclusion. On top of that, when parents are allowing their young children to watch and listen to things beyond their age and go to school then they're passing that on to other children. I've had that problem with my triplets at their new school. They've come home saying things that they shouldn't even be privileged to... in kindergarten.
4 year olds should be watching preschool shows like Dora, Super Why (PBS), Word World, Team Umizoomi, Ni Hai, Kailan, etc.
Keep her little!
