Wash alone in cold water on the delicate cycle. In the future if some bleeding occurs, you can use Clorox 2. That will wash out any color bleeding if done immediately.
My mother in law sent me a baby blanket that is red with white patches she made and before I use it I would like to to something to the color to keep the red from fading on the white and onto other clothes that are washed with it. please can anyone send their advice on what you have done before to help this from happening.

I generally wash red things first in cold water to keep from bleeding and the dryer will usually set the colors. Although, you'll likely want to continue to wash in cold water. If you're worried about germs, use a few drops of tea tree oil in the wash.
Color Guard may help...it is by Shout and is a lil' dryer sheet looking thing that goes in the wash and absorbs the color that is bleeding....I use it in every load usually. When I get it out I can tell what color was bleeding....but thankfully it caught it and did not ruin our clothes.
Walmart sells them in the laundry aisle.
NEVER< NEVER< NEVER< wash the blanket in anything BUT cold water!!!
Hopefully, your MIL washed both fabrics separately before she sewed the blanket, and that would help, too. Just in case, she didn't, though...wash the blanket by itself in the cold water. When it's through in the washer, DO NOT let it "sit" in the washer, but put it in the dryer immediately. The heat from the dryer will help "set" the colors. If you let the blanket "sit" is when your colors are most likely to bleed.

Congratulations on #3!!
Wash in cold water for sure with vinegar. Vinegar helps settle the color. For the first time, I would even wash it by itself to be safe.
