M..
As long as they are cut up and you watch him it should be fine. Im a psycho and still dont let my two year old eat popcorn. Only because in my CPR class, popcorn is the hardest to get out if they are choking on it.
I just, not thinking, cut up a bunch of grapes for my 15 month old and he's loving it... He's got a mouthful of teeth and also eats popcorn [gasp!]... now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure my BFF gave him a hot dog once too. This should be okay, right? I'm just watching him like a hawk so he doesn't choke on the skin.... there's going to be hell to pay if I try to take it away now...

I don't give hard things like popcorn, pretzels, nuts, ect... But anything soft as long as it is cut up and you watch him. My almost 15 m. old LOVES grapes! I use kitchen scissors and it is super easy.
He's 15 months, he likes it.....it's fine.
By this age, my kids were eating everything. You are right to watch for choking, but if he likes grapes, let him have them. The good thing about grapes is they're pretty slippery. If not chewed properly, they should just slide on down.
Best wishes.
Cut the grapes in half! My mom (God bless her) used to also peel them for my son at that age!
It's fine as long as they are cut up so that they aren't a circle (cut them lengthwise). Same with the hotdogs.... any object that is circular (think a quarter, or wad of gum) can accidentally become inhaled/lodged in the windpipe. If you gut that grape or hotdog into crescent shapes (a grape should be cut into quarters so that there are 4 pieces, otherwise it is still a circular shape) then it should be fine. My kids loved grapes too and ate them waaaayyyy before 15 months. Cut up of course.
I actually cut the grapes in 4's and give them to my 2.5 year old. He loves them!
My kids ate grapes much younger than that (cut into quarters/small pieces of course)....I know some moms take the skin off -- I never did that. I slice hot dogs down the center and then across so they are also little pieces (and I don't take the skin off of the turkey hot dogs but have taken it off of beef ones that are cooked on the grill). Both my kids hate popcorn -- I didn't try it until they were over 2 though. Hope he enjoys the grapes :)
He should be fine - I gave them to my kids much earlier than that - I just cut them up into smaller pieces. As long as you don't give them to him whole - he should be fine!
i was paranoid so I cut them in 4's ...then in 1/2 when she was a little bigger....now at 4 shr can do what she wants but I ask her to take a bite before shooving the whole thing in her mouth....
Used to cut them in half. THAT'S annoying!
But if you're watching him and seeing that he is able to get his teeth through them before swallow, sounds ok to me!
:)
(Sigh, nevermind, NOW I see you said you ALREADY cut them! Yeah, that's fine then!)
I cut grapes into 1/4's and DD does fine & has since 10-11 months? I worry about the round shapes of things. I give her beans & chick peas (which I dont cut & always fear her choking on them, but their too small to cut)
Hotdogs terrify me. The FDA might actually require choking warnings be put on them. The reason they terrify me, is very personal though. A family friend of mine lost his 14 month old to a hot dog. :( Everyone was devastated! Especially them, of course. He was my son's best friend and such a joy! They always watched him like a hawk, but the bite of hotdog got lodged and they couldn't get it out until the EMT arrived and dislodged it. It was too late though, they had to pull the plug several days later. Hotdogs are serious business and should ALWAYS be cut up at this age.
As far as grapes, it depends on the size. My son is 22 months with all teeth and both sets of molars, and I still cut them in fourths, because they are huge here. We've stuck with that. Everything else, he gets it whole. The grapes are the only fruit we still cut. He's very good at eating whole fruits.
My 13 month old has been eating quarted grapes, skin and all, for months. He also eats quarted hot dogs. I think you're okay! My question is, when do I start feeding him raw, small chunked apples and carrots to up the veggie count? If I wait to long, he won't eat 'em........hmmmm.
They can have both grapes and hot dogs AS LONG as they are cut. Cut the grapes in 1/2 or more if they are too big and might lodge in his throat. For hot dogs cut them long ways in half THEN slice. Never just slice or give whole...
I just gave my 14 month old grapes yesterday, he loved them!!!! I think it's perfectly fine.
It's fine. But remember they kind of work like prunes, so too many and it isn't pretty....diaper wise.
It's fine. I gave my kids everything I was eating at that age. There's really nothing they can't have.
Just keep an eye on him. I think he is a good age and if he has teeth then you are fine. It is so great that he loves them too, great and easy fruit for toddlers.
dd has eaten them since 1 yr. just cut them in half.
I think it should be fine! How great that he loves them!
Common choking hazards include:
1. Grapes – whole grapes are a choking hazard. Children should not eat whole grapes until they are well over the age of 5. Grapes should be cut when served to children.
2. Hard candy – hard candy, including cough drops, are a leading cause of choking. Hard candies should NEVER be given to young children. Gum is also NOT recommended.
3. Hot dogs – hot dogs should be cut into small pieces when served to children. The AAP recommends that all foods should be cut into pieces smaller than 1/2 inch.
4. Nuts – the AAP recommends that whole nuts/peanuts should not be given to children until they are at least 7 years old.
5. Popcorn
What I do is I cut them in half the quarter the halves. Make sure everything is not a huge size, and you will be fine.
I would say its fine as long as they are cut in quarters......
It's fine. Just make sure it's small enough for him not to choke on :)
