Don't get me started on Downton Abbey. The characters are so multi-dimensional - the writing and acting is fabulous. Sigh...
So bascially, its a TV version of Gosford Park? (a movie that came out years ago also starring Maggie Smith, as well as Kristen Scott Thomas, a young Clive owen and Ryan Philippe sp? among many others). An "Upstairs/Downstairs" type of show?
I love Pride and Prejudice '90s version. I loved how they all said "Dashwood". I had a cat for 3 mos I called Mrs. Dashwood (she was stolen :(
Ok, I only watched the first show. I guess I'll try the 2nd at some point. If I have any questions, now I know who to come to! Thanks ya'll!

Love, love, love Downton! But I will say I was hooked with the very first episode. Watched Seasons 1 & 2 in just three days so I could be caught up for the start of Season 3. No need for sleep if I can get a Downton fix. :)
I really enjoy reading, and to me, watching Downton Abbey is like being engrossed in a good book. I remember when I first started it that I kept having the feeling that a good book was waiting for me and when I would look on the counter for it, I'd realize I really was just thinking of the show and looking forward to the next episode.
It's very much like a soap opera. Quite the guilty pleasure.
I love this series! (I also was watching my copy of Pride and Prejudice --90s version--last night yet again. )
I liked Gosford but think you get a chance to 'move around' the characters a bit more. Some storylines are very compelling, some less so, but I so enjoy this sort of Upstairs/Downstairs type of drama. And eye candy-- beautiful costume dresses... sigh. Lovely teacups. Beautiful manners and biting wit. Maggie Smith has some of the BEST lines.
I've seen parts of the original "Upstairs/Downstairs," but it was kinda boring to me.
"Downton Abbey" hooked me! None fo the characters are static in "Downton." They all grow and change. Maggie Smith is phenomenal in it!!
My husband and I LOVE Downton. Can't WAIT for the next season!
We almost bought a "Free Bates" tee shirt at one point!
I never watched the other things you mentioned, but I got so hooked on Downton Abbey that I watched all three seasons in two weeks. It's fabulous!
We just watched the whole season one in a weekend on Netflix. I wanted to see what all the hype was about so we checked it out.
The storylines, writing, costumes and characters are phenomenal (IMHO). I'm impatiently waiting for season two to be on Netflix.
Yes, it resembles it. But, it oh so much more! I adore the cast, and have followed their careers before watching Downton Abbey, so its' been great to see all of them in one show. I love it!
I love it. Just got into it before we moved to the UK. The funny thing is, I can't find it on TV over here.
Love it. I found Season 1 on Net flix and watched it first and then found season 2 on Amazon Prime and then watched Season 3. I recommend going in order so that you know what in the heck is going on. Each episode builds on the previous.
I had a horrible hectic job that made no sense and Downton Abbey would calm me down so much because everything is calm and principled and so soothing to watch.
Love it. Miss it.
I enjoyed it more than Gosford Park, which was the movie that made me want to watch it in the first place.
Love love love it. It was about 1/2 way through season 3 when we decided to start watching it. So we set it to record and watched season 1 and 2 and then season 3, in about 3 weeks. I, seriously, watch VERY little TV. I record a few of my favorites and will watch MAYBE one show a night if I have time. I just can't be bothered. But I was so hooked. Every time I turned it off for the night, I felt like I had turned a movie off in the middle. Who does that? I just wanted to keep watching. Can't wait for Season 4!
I started watching on Xfinity because I couldn't find anything else. I'm hooked! I love it!
I never watched the other things you mention, but because of peer pressure my husband and I began watching season one on netflix, while taping season 3. We got so hooked we bought season 2 on itunes and plowed through all three seasons in a months time.
It's almost a historical piece in an upscale Soap Opera kind of way. Maggie Smith is wonderful! Both men and women love it.
The story line is much deeper then Upstairs Downstairs, but yes very much along the same lines. It really is an amazingly and superbly done series.
