Any Good Hygeine Videos Out There?

I feel like I have to constantly remind my kids to wash their hands WITH soap after using the toilet. I know there was a good video out there about germs and bacteria that I saw with a niece and nephew 9 yrs. ago from the library. I can't seem to find one that is kid friendly and will teach them about it enough to get them more motivated. I have cute soap dispensers, bubbly ones, etc. Any ideas out there? With the new baby, I am especially freaked about germs. Thanks.

What can I do next?

I have a childrens book called "Germs Are Not For Sharing." Also, I got this "hands-on" activity out of a magazine --- Have your kids put glitter all over their hands. The glitter represents germs. Then have them go around the house touching things and each other as they normally would. Then show them how the glitter/germs were left all over the place. Last, have them wash their hands with soap and water until all of the glitter is off of their hands. It won't solve the problem. It's a constant battle. But it's a good lesson.

When I worked in daycare, we used to do an activity with the kids to help them learn to wash their hands better. We put a little vegetable oil on their hands and then sprinkled their hands with cinnamon. The cinnamon was supposed to represent the germs. It takes a while to wash off, and it shows how you really have to wash well to get clean. Also, my mother is a public health nurse, and she taught me that you should wash as long as it takes to sing Happy Birthday TWICE. It takes longer than you'd think!

there is a book called "what makes you ill" by S. Mayes I know about this one because it is an Usborne book. (www.celestsbooks.com)
I got to thinking about it though and I found this website
http://www.librarything.com/tag/germs
it's a huge list of books on germs.
I didn't find any movies about it though. I wonder if your local librarian could help? they might have something.
I found a website that might be of interest
http://www.stopgerms.org/

okay looking around a bit more on some of the books (I love books so I got a bit carried away researching this lol) I did find one video...
https://store.latsa.com/product.php?productid=239&cat...
I'm not sure how good it is, but the book that is with it has lots of great tags and reviews.

I also saw a demonstration once with some glitter...the teacher put a little glitter on one kids hands and had them touch another kids hands etc. until you looked around and everyone had glitter, not just on hands but on noses, on the desks, the floor etc. just little specks of glitter everywhere to show how germs spread and spread and we don't even realize it.

anyway I hope some of this helps! lol. the company with the video has several books on germs as well. they look interesting.

good luck.

If you look up the housefairy on the internet she has a video that is good for hygeine. I have a hard time getting my 4 year old to stop washing her hands and she has told me that the house fairy wants her to wash her hands very well. My 2 yos just follows his sisters example. She not only helps with hygeine but also manners and helping the kids to want to clean their rooms. There is a small fee; I think it is 13 dollars for two years but she also has some free videos on her website. Check it out and see if it may work for you. Good luck!

I recently read an article regarding how to teach kids about spreading germs---using glitter.
Letting them get the glitter on their hands, then they go play...later on let them find all the places & toys that the glitter came off. All the while talking about how germs are transported and while washing hands talk about how important it is to wash thoroughly---washing to get the glitter off is a lesson in and of itself.

I don't know of videos but we use hand sanitizer and call it "Special Soap" and keep it right next to the toilet. (Only to be used if going number 1 only.) Also my kids enjoy making signs to post in our house to remind them of certain rules. Perhaps one posted in the bathroom at their eye level, written by the biggest offender would help for a few days.

Unfortunately I think it is common for many kids to forget and need reminders throughout the young years. Good luck finding that movie.

Dear Shauna,

I made my son a hand towels, and he loves washing his hand. Especially since it's his own hand towel. I make and sell them on my website, if you want something special. Hope this helps.

Sending Happy Greetings
