I just turned 41 last week, trying for baby #2 and was just told that my day 3 FSH level is 30! My RE told me that he couldnt do anything for me unless I used donar eggs. I am completely devastated and am thinking about getting another opinion. I ovulate every month but I have had 2 miscarriages last year (in April at 9wks with a blighted ovum and Sept with a chemical pregnancy). Regardless, I will still keep trying as long as I'm still ovulating and pray/hope for a miracle.

If you are interested in how hypnosis and the mind/body connection can contribute to your fertility you may call me. I can even refer you to someone in your area.

Hi C.,
Sorry you are going through this. I know the ups and downs well. But FSH is just a number that fluctuates GREATLY month to month and is not a certain, 100% indicator of anything. Read Inconceivable as another poster suggested. Also if you Google this you will find stories of lots of women who have children despite high FSH and negative doctors. I had my baby at 42 and it was a terrific pregnancy and she's an awesome child. It can be harder as you get older - I had 2 miscarriages, too - but it is possible!

I have heard that Dr. Kaplan at Fertility Centers of IL is very good and works with older women. There is also a woman at Rush in the city, Dr. Mary Wood Molo, that specializes in issues older women face. Good luck to you!

Hi C.,
I am currently in a very similar situation...I have a 19 month old daughter conceived naturally without even trying. I am 39 and will be 40 in a few months. We started trying for baby #2 when our daughter was 9 months old. I had a c-section so was told by my OB to wait at least that long. We knew we wanted at least three kids so we wanted to get started as soon as possible. I was frustrated by not getting pregnant but really didn't think there would be anything wrong with me...it had happened so easily the first time. I went to my OB in August and she put me on clomid in Sept (I knew I ovulated...I think OB's don't know what else to try). After doing the day 3 and then day 10 testing I found out that my FSH level was 23. I couldn't believe it. I really never expected to have a problem after baby #1. My own mom had her first at 38 and me at 42...I assumed I too would be okay.
My OB refered me to FCI and Dr. Kaplan...I think someone here mentioned him. I LOVE HIM and his office...everyone has been wonderful. A friend of mine knows several women who were told other places that they would never have a baby and they have with him.
I did an IUI in November which did not work...my FSH level has fluctuated from 5 to 30 to 4 to 21. It's insane and insanely frustrating. Dr. Kaplan told me that the best way to have another child would be through egg donor...statisically the best chance. I actually have a friend who has done IVF five times and is currently pregnant through egg donor...the only time it has worked.

Right now I have all the drugs in my house to begin IVF...I began with one drug and then when I went for the blood test my FSH was too high to begin. I go back this week and hopefully will get the green light to begin the next drug...which will lead to IVF. I am hopeful that this will work and that I can use my own eggs. I haven't yet decided what I think about egg donation. I want more children so badly...my daughter is amazing...so amazing that I want to share her with more. I'm sure you feel the same way. We also don't have a lot of family...she has two cousins who live out of state and that will probably be it. I don't want her to grow up and be alone...siblings are so important, I think.

Please send me a message if you ever want to talk further about this or have any questions. Good luck to you!

Hi C.,
I feel your pain.... You need to buy the book " inconcievable"
I am a sham with a 3 yr old with a high FSH.... After trying for 2 yrs we decided to do IVF in CO cuz we desperately wanted more children. After a long road we are going for a transfer with MY embryos( not a donor) .. Which is what I was told . I am soooo much info on Fsh and infertility if you ever want to chat. Remember your Fsh can vary from stress..... It's only a number .
Stay positive .... Def look into some natural ways to help horomones!
Best of luck !!!!

So I see that two other women have laready mentioned Dr. Kaplan, but I adore him and view him as the reason we now have our beautiful 13 1/2 month old daughter. He is at FCI, and works out of both the Highland Park and River North offices and I encourage you to call and do whatever it takes to get on his schedule.

I was 32 when we went to see him and had been diagnosed with premature ovarian failure, specifically because of the extremly high FSH levels I was getting, but only after starting IVF with another facility. (I don't mean to make that sound like the facility did something to me, it was just very poor happenstance that when we started IVF seemed to coincide with me going into premature ovarian failure).

Bottom line, Dr. Kaplan didn't disagree with the diagnosis when we sought him as a second opinion but was forthcoming and aggressive in what we needed to do to give us our best chance for a little one. . . and a few months later, there was our little baby girl growing inside me.

All I can say is my heart goes out to you and I encourage you to try every option. Even before Kaplan got us pregnant, we were out dealing with donor agencies, so depending on your view, it can be an option. But it is such a tremendously tough thing to go through.

So please let me know if you need more info. I'm happy to speak more privately as well. Feel free to email me at ____@____.com
