I wouldn't really consider 311 and Sublime to be punk :)
I used to work for the agency that booked 311's show
Eta...I grew in the TSOL days ... like I said ... 311/Sublime ain't punk, lol
I just heard that 311, pennywise, and sublime with Rome are coming to tampa! Yay! This brought some happiness to my day. It's been a rough week! So who else loves punk? Like real punk not what the kids try to pass off as it these days.
Umm really lee? Yes they are punk, ok maybe more of a ska-punk but still punk. Bradley always identified his music as punk.
Manda F I LOVE five iron frenzy!
Thanks for ruining my joy ladies! Ska is a form of punk! I think I'm going to go sit with my boy and listen to some rancid or ramones...
No the pop bands they try to pass are bands like blink and crap like taking back sunday bleh! all the ones I've named earned their dues! They have been in scence since the 80's...but whatever to you all! Those bands bring my son and me joy infact tonight as we listened to sublime, the real sublime not Rome, he sang "what I got" for me:) and for the first time in a week he said he does feel loved :)

Let's see, how can I say this on a family-friendly site?
Eff, yeah.
Well, me, I don't consider 311 and Sublime "real punk." ;) To me...that's mainstream radio wannabe garbage.
I take it back to TSOL, Dead Kennedy's, Bad Religion, the Sex Pistols, Rancid, Pennywise, Circle Jerks, etc...and the ska mixes, like Less Than Jake and Fishbone, Blue Meanies...
Personally, although I did love all the punk, ska is what got me. I have a great ska collection and I love sharing it with my kids. To them, it's just happy dance around music. ;)
Ah...those were the days.
(And you seem to be getting all defensive in your SWH. Who cares what anyone thinks? Enjoy whatever music you want to enjoy! I also like Prince and Michael Jackson and could give a flip less...and my fav. of all time is 50s music, period. But I don't get offended if someone has an opinion...and I think the general opinion amongst those of us who actually LIVED punk is that no...311 and Sublime aren't "punk.")
**Some highlights for me...just want to share...I got to see Jello do a spoken word concert and TALK to him afterwards...yay!!! Also got to see the Dwarves open for Motorhead and that was a great day. Have also seen Guttermouth, Reverend HOrton, Zebrahead, Rollins, Lords of Acid, five times to They Might Be Giants, and a spawn of others...so I feel like I have experienced enough to at least be an authority on what 311 isn't.
Sex Pistols
Black Flag
Lime Spiders
Alternative music/rock
My friends were Punks and Skateboarders
That is what I liked, and still like.
I like the old school punk Skinny puppy, 7 seconds, nitzer ebb, sex pistols I could go on and on. If you have not seen it already watch Sid and Nancy. I will always be a new wave girl at heart. Depeche mode, new order me likey, lol.
:)
Sublime is pretty much the soundtrack to my college years, and that's AFTER Bradley Nowell died. Those albums just endure, ya know.
I've seen 311 quite a few times, they were one of my favorite bands in the 90's. My husband refuses to go to another 311 show with me, he thinks I drool over them too much. OK they are cute but I like the music too!
I've also seen a lot of Social Distortion shows and closest to my heart are Face to Face, and the San Diego punk bands Blink 182 and Unwritten Law. I loved MxPx, AFI, Strung Out, NoFX...
I really love that genre and that time in my life! In my opinion there is no better decade for music than the 90's. I also really love the alt-rock from the 90's (I adore Radiohead and Beck, Smashing Pumpkins) and grunge rock (Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, STP), and the emo-fem stuff like Liz Phair and Tori Amos, Aimee Mann.
Anytime Bro Hymn comes on the radio (which isn't often, sadly) you just have to roll down the windows and blast it.
I'm gonna have to go home and break out some of my old CD's this weekend!
I'm not familiar with the bands you listed, and to me, real punk would be stuff like Ramones, The Clash, Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks and Generation X. But, yeah, I love it! I hope you have a great time at the show.
I'm subjected to listen to, by the husband, old school punk-GBH, and a few others who's names escape me at the moment. Also Suicidal Tendencies, not sure they are considered punk though.
I also don't consider Sublime punk, although I like them. Went and looked up Pennywise, I think they are one of the bands my husband listens to, gotta admit they all sorda sound the same to me, and nothing I listened to of 311 sounded punk. Nice band though.
I was and am obsessed with Sublime. Wish I knew which of my brothers stole my "40 Oz to Freedom" cd.
The closest thing I like to punk is Pink.
She's not really as punk as her image, but I do like lots of her music.
What's punk?
I was raised loving The Cure.
Yes, I like these bands and many of the ones mentioned by others, like Depeche Mode, The Cure, NIN, Skinny Puppy, etc., I guess I am weird when it comes to music, so I guess you'll be going to see them live? ;)
I can enjoy punk, but I am not a fan exactly. There are songs from all the above mentioned artists I know and listen to but I do not think I would enjoy a concert.
