Hi moms,
I have been having some behavioral and sleeping issues with my 6 year old daughter and have read good things about certain oils to put on them to help calm them. I was just wondering if anyone else has had good results with any oils? I have read about lavender and a few other mixes to help them sleep well at night and focus and calm down during the day. Any advice would be appreciated.

Edit- thanks for the advice so far. The docs are telling me she has ADHD which is why I would like the help to calm her. They say the sleep issue is related to that, but I wonder if she gets better sleep if it might help her behavior. There have been a lot of blogs on the Internet about rubbing the oils directly on them and that it will help the ADHD which is why I was wondering if anyone else has had any results. Thanks again.
Thanks

The only 100% pure and tested is Young Living. If you want to really be certain about what you are introducing to your child, I would only suggest Young Living. I do not find them too pricey for the quality needed. Also do not put any essential oil in a burner or humidifier, for the properties you are seeking out you need a cool air diffuser. The plug ins, candles and such that were suggested before my comment, I would NOT do, look at the ingredients and notice the toxic components in ALL of them, yuck! Be informed though, most importantly, about purity because you could be doing more harm than good and obviously you are trying to seek out quality alternatives for your sweet girl.
Best of thoughts and prayers to your adventure in helping her.

Oppps and I forgot to add, these are just my opinions and suggestions that I have found since learning to incorporate EO's into my journey in keeping my family healthy.

I love essential oils and think that perhaps it helps me focus and relax... but the effect is so mild you can't really tell. For that reason, I'd advise looking at other remedies first - or figuring out why the behavioral issues are occurring. You can certainly use peppermint oil for focus and perking things up, and lavender or eucalyptus for calming down... but don't put them ON your daughter. Use an oil burner to infuse the scent in the appropriate rooms. But again, they won't fix a problem, just complement whatever else you're doing.

johnson's and johnsons makes lavender baby bath and lavender lotion. I do'nt know if that is potent enough, but it's readily available at the grocery store.

you already limit bright lights and Tv/electronics a few hours before bed?

my kid went through a rough sleeping patch at that age too.

you can give her camomile tea.
Bath and body works makes a lavender pillow spray that helps.
I do use aromatherapy oils in my kids rooms, lavender , and euclipitus oil. Peppermint oil is good for focus. sperment oil is less harsh than peppermint oil same kind of effects. Rosemary oil is also good for focus.

why does she need to "calm down during the day"?

We use essential oils all the time. We actually use a blend called Peace and Calming and it works really well, but I am kind of burnt out over Young Living's astronomical prices and shipping costs, so I've been looking at different EO companies,

Here is a blend you might be interested in:http://planttherapy.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&...

*It's not recommended to heat essential oils as it renders them toxic. Don't put them in a burner or in hot wax. Diffusing EO's is a great way to get the benefits of the oils, but should be used only in a cool mist diffuser made for essential oils.

You can absolutely apply essential oils to the skin if you apply with a carrier oil. My daughter loves EO's and coconut oil rubbed into the bottoms of her feet.

I use several different oils and I would be happy to answer any questions you have. I'm not an expert, but I'm learning! :)

As others note there are products out there with scents that are associated with calming. But if you are talking about using what are known as "pure essential oils" -- please don't do it without consulting with a salesperson who knows these things well. Some essential oils are actually toxic if ingested and/or can cause skin reactions or damage the eyes if a child were to get them in her eyes. I'd go with scented products like Bath and Body Works stuff; however, those also contain a boatload of chemicals. Really, rather than focusing first on aromatherapy, I'd seek out the root causes of her behavioral and sleep issues (the two may or may not be realted; don't assume they are related) by talking as soon as possible to her school counselor, teacher, pediatrician, etc., and also assessing whether there are changes or stresses in her life that you may not realize are affecting her (changes in the home, even positive ones like a new sibling; changes or problems at school, or trouble adjusting to first grade if that's where she is; and so on). Aromatherapy is great but is not in any way a replacement for digging into the cause of her issues and handling them alongside some good professionals. So...yes, seek out those great (and safe) aromas later on, but first look at the reasons WHY she needs this calming.
