You know when you walk into someones home and it smells like a candle. I love it and would like our home to smell great. We bought the Air Wick i believe is what we have and I tried two different smells. Both gave me headaches. Have you found sents that work best or anything else for a home freshiner. I know about other options like candels, bulb rings, fabreeze or insents (which i love insents but the hubby hates). But I would like to find something for the plug in that i am not as sensitive too. What worked for you to have a fresh smell ????? ------ I should mention it is on the lowest setting and its in the far bathroom but i just plugged it in for two hours and i have a terrible headache. :(

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks ladies. I did not mean to imply our house smelled bad. Just kinda old? Sometimes a faint gas smell as we have a gas oven. Not that our house is in danger of exploding. Its just a gas stove smell like all homes with gas ovens smell like that after being used. A faint faint smell but still a odd smell. I am sensitive to it. I am loving the direct to bulb with vinalla suggestion THANKS!!!

I can't understand why anyone would buy them. Who wants to smell chemicals?

I've worked in 2 offices where they've installed automatic airfresheners in the bathroom. I'm extremely allergic and had to prove they need to be removed. Well they are marketed for bathroom use. However, if you read the specifications you would need to install them in a bathroom the size of a gymnasium to be safe.

Young Living has essential oils that are wonderful - all organic. There's probably someone living near you that is a user/rep of them and would be happy to allow you to smell them and see what scent you like.

Clean with vinegar and bake something yummy. That seems to work fine for me. :)

A little googling will reveal that MOST "air freshening" products, in fact, most scented household products and even many toiletries / cosmetics, include harmful products that don't belong in, on, or around living bodies. This is especially important to know if you have children, who will be exposed to those chemicals for their whole lives. (Search "air freshener safety" for a bazillion hits.)

Some of us will reach a threshhold beyond which our bodies' ability to neutralize toxins will be exceeded, resulting symptoms like headaches, nausea, dizziness, mood changes, and worse. Concentration, breathing and sleep will be affected.

This happened to me over 25 years ago, and I've had to be very careful to avoid exposures ever since. As a result, my life is extremely limited, since "scent" is so insanely popular. I've been in group sensitivity testing situations watching the effects of chemicals on children, and it's really sad. A tiny drop of some substance squirted under the tongue can turn a child from calm to frenetic or raging in a matter of minutes. Kids are exposed to WAY more chemicals today than even one generation ago, and we're not designed to handle it.

It sounds like your body is begging you to stay away from these poisons. Other posters have offered some good options. Be careful experimenting with natural scented oils, however, since some of those could affect you, too.

It gives you a headache because you are sensitive to the toxic chemicals in them. They are bad for you to be around and luckily your body is telling you to steer clear.

If I need my house to smell like something other than - my house, I bake cookies, boil orange peels with cinnamon sticks, Boil vanilla etc.. Search natural ways to scent your home.

Get rid of all your household cleaners too. You only need a little unscented soap (I use Shaklee Basic H), water and some vinegar. If you are sensitive to scents these will bother you too. You will be surprised how much better you feel when you get the artificial scents out of your home. Oh and no more scented laundry detergent. :)

Don't use them. I have never used them. Essential oils in an oil burner work very well. Just put a couple of drops in water and light an unscented tea candle under it and it will evaporate the water/oil and the scent will fill the room.

If your home smells bad it needs a good cleaning, not scented anything that will cover the bad smell. Keep bathrooms clean, clean out litter boxes, take out garbage, put dirty diapers in a covered waste basket lined with a plastic bag from a store and dispose of daily and that should take care of unpleasent odors.

Honestly, those things give me a headache also. And to me, a house that doesn't have a smell is fine. I had to have them when my house was on the market. Fresh Breeze or something like that was light enough that it didn't bother me. I think those air freshener things are actually not good for you, so if your house doesn't smell bad, then it's fine :)

Go for something with all natural oils instead of the artificial chemicals. Just get some essential oil that you like and put a drop on a light bulb. It will fragrance your house.

I can't take the perfumed things at all, but I love the essential oils. A couple of drops of lavender oil in bathrooms works for several hours and in kitchen I can do the same or boil water and cinnamon for a few minutes to have a fabulous smell most the day. For me I can't take the mixed oils in fragrant things, but pure extract works. Maybe figuring out what specifically bothers you will help figure out what you need.

I am allergic to almost all scents that plug in etc. They make me so sick and headaches are horrible.

I take a bottle of Febreeze and after I clean I will spray the carpets, and furniture. Then I open all the windows to get fresh air in and that helps. I also spray the screens on the windows so that when the wind blows then it spreads the smell all around too.

You can also get a teapot and put in cinnamon and water and let it boil for a little while and that makes the house smell sooo good! I like to do apple and cinnamon in the fall makes everything seem so warm and cozy.

In reference to the gas smell, I also have a gas oven and it doesn't smell like gas when I use it. You may want to schedule the gas co. to come out and do a free check.

As for the air freshener, those are so bad for your health. I don't like them, either; I have a really sensitive nose, like you. I LOVE the vanilla essential oil on the light bulb suggestion!

Use essential oils. Here are some ideas on how to use them. http://www.greenfootsteps.com/aromatherapy-air-freshener....

I can not tolerate the artificial air fresheners. Like you they give me a headache (doesn't matter if they are 1 day or 10 days old). The chemicals in those things also scare me.

To me all Air Wick products smell the same. I can walk into a room and know instantly if it is Air Wick or not. I just don't care for that product...reminds me of the out houses at scout camp.

You are allergic to the TOXIC chemicals in the gross air freshners like air wicks. I am the same way. I clean with Vinegar and even the smell of fabric softener can give me a headache.

SCENTSY is the answer. It has no toxic chemicals, no parabens, no soot. It is amazing. I am such a firm believer in the product I started selling it. I highly suggest you check it out. PM me if you'd like more info. My house smells amazing and I am headache free!

Those are usually only strong for a couple of days & then the smell subsides considerably, to a more tolerable level. Just plug them in in a room or place that you don't spend as much as time in, and then move them accordingly, and you should be good. I don't use these because they're not very cost effective.

What about reed difusers? Those seem a lot less toxic & strong.
