Baby Not Sleeping After Vaccines

My 5 month old had his shots on Monday. Before this he was up twice a night to eat and slept 10.5-11 hours. Since Monday his sleep is getting increasingly worse. Last night he was up 8 times and at bedtime it took us 3 hours to get him to sleep. He then woke up 20 minutes later screaming. The night progressed very similar, got him to sleep then he would wake up screaming. He had one long stretch of sleep in the swing. He also has not napped in four days. He is beyond cranky, and nothing I do is helping. I am not sure if this is shot related, but he is a completely different baby. When will he sleep? Anyone have an experience like this? I feel like I am going crazy from no sleep. ETA: He goes to bed early at 6:30

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

He has been given Tylenol before bed every night. I know he needs to nap but I have tried everything and he will not on his own. I cant devote my whole day to getting him to nap when I have another child. I have tried having him nap in the swing, patting in the cribb, rocking and nothing works. If he does take a nap it is supposed only for 20 minutes. I am not expecting him to sleep through the night. I was fine with twice a night feedings but waking 8-9 times seems a little much!

My youngest has terrible reactions to vaccines, even though I only let him get one at a time. Last time, his symptoms lasted about 10 days before he seemed mostly himself again. Does you son sleep better after the Tylenol? He could possibly be in pain. There are a myriad of reactions to vaccines that could be bothering him that he can't explain. Crying is the only way he can tell you something is wrong. Maybe try Motrin as that lasts longer. Have you considered cosleeping for a period of time until he gets to feeling better? You may both get better rest that way. I hope he feels better soon.

Also, my children go to bed around 6:15-6:30pm every night and sleep until 7:15-8:00am. My 21 month old always wakes frequently throughout the night if he goes to bed any later. I doubt an early bedtime is the problem.

As it happens, shots happen during wonder weeks. This means that they stop sleeping because they are going through a cognitive leap, not because of the shots.

Your son is overtired and that is why he is waking like he is. Try moving bed time up, even an hour earlier. Also google wonder week.

He is going to bed kinda early. Also, this could be a reaction to the vaccines. Call your pediatrician. They injection babies with way too many vaccines at one time. Next round, I would ask the doctor to space them out. I have seen several cases of this happening after vaccines. I stopped working in pediatrics when they started expecting us to overload babies with multiple vaccines . I am not saying vaccines are bad but some of them are unnecessary and the side effects are not worth the benefit.

ETA: Anyone who gets on here and unequivocally states that this is NOT a vaccine reaction has no stake in your baby's health. Please remember that. To state that is irresponsible, and ignorant. Err on the side of caution and care, and consider the very real possibility that these particular vaccines he got are not ones to repeat ANY time soon, if ever. I have no stake in your baby's health either, but I'm not going to dismiss what I know. Until you have seen your baby change irreversibly from a vaccine, you can NEVER know how you will feel about cautioning others, and researching the frequency of how often this is happening in America.

You need to report "inconsolable crying" to your pediatrician ASAP. You need to SERIOUSLY reconsider whether the risk of brain harm from these particular vaccines is worth the remote possibility of the baby actually getting the diseases he is being vaxed for. Inconsolable crying and excessive fussiness are both signs of brain swelling, and temporary brain swelling is a reported side effect of many of today's vaccines.
Not trying to scare you or sway you, but this is YOUR baby. And he is having a severe reaction to the toxins in his body. This isn't about herd immunity, or "oh, my kids did that too". Don't be that parent that wishes she could have done something different when its too late. Blessings.

The fact of the matter is that NO ONE on this thread knows if this has anything to do with the vaccinations or not. Your child has had a series of shots before. How did he do with them? You haven't said.

There could be something else wrong, It could be a reaction to the vaccine. He could be all messed up at THIS point because of no naps and the fact that his schedule is screwed up. We just don't know.

For those who just outright say no more vaccines, we've had moms here who have gone that route and then written on here to tell us that their children have whooping cough and are in the hospital. I promise you that they wish that they'd gotten their children the vaccine. Whooping cough is awful and will MORE than keep children up. Crankiness is nothing when it comes to these diseases that vaccines prevent.

If you haven't taken the baby back the doctor, you should. Ask the doctor about how to get him back on his sleep schedule. And don't just throw out the idea of having him vaccinated.

This has nothing to do with his vaccinations. First, he's not getting nearly enough sleep. In a 24-hour period your baby should be getting about 15 hours of sleep. He's getting shorted by a lot. He's still far, far too young to be expected to sleep through the night. Instead, he should be taking naps that last naturally about 45 minutes during the day, wake for a couple of hours, and then nap again.

Are you breastfeeding? If so he should be eating on-demand. He would get probably 6-8 feedings per day.

If he's on formula, then he should have 4-5 feedings each day, 6-8 oz. per feeding, maximum of 32 oz. per day. This is in a 24 hour period.

If he doesn't get the majority of his calories during the day then he's going to wake more often at night. He also has a very small stomach so you can't overfill his bottles and "make" him eat more than he wants during the day.

If you think he's still sore from the shots, and has been all week, then why in the world haven't you given him pain management and relief? He's old enough for Infant Tylenol and I would ask your pediatrician if he's old enough for Infant Motrin drops. Ask your pediatrician if the crabbiness you've been seeing could be related to vaccines, but he'll likely tell you that the behavior is developmental. That the baby is instinctively changing his sleep routine due to changes in brain development that start right now.

This sounds a lot like my son around 5 months--- and I delayed the first round of shots until he was 9 months old. There could be development going on (as previously pointed out) and this is also a time when the teeth are starting to emerge- it's a little on the 'earlier' side but not unheard-of-- and the pain of the tooth moving through the gums does hurt some babies profoundly.

Bedtime is 6:30? I have never heard of a bedtime that early. Baby's need to eat every 3-4 hours and a baby that age sleeps like 13-15 hours per day. So he should be waking at least twice per night and napping several hours during the day. Perhaps even 2-3 naps.

I'd say just give him some Tylenol and see if that helps. He may be feeling some pain somewhere.

I'm very grateful that Penny N. responded the way she did.

I would re-read her answer.

I was astounded to read some of the other "pat" answers. Nobody here knows what is going on with your baby and whether or not it is connected to the vaccines that were administered.

I hope this gets better for your baby and for you. <<hugs>>
