Can anyone direct me somewhere I can bring batteries to be recycled. We are running through battries with all the fantastic baby gizmoes and I'd prefer not to toss them in the garbage. Also we have an old battery for a sump pump back-up that needs to be disposed of properly. Any suggestions or leads would be appreciated.

I am the same way - I carry them in my purse until I have a few and then drop them off - I used to go to Walgreens but I think they have stopped that - I did find Home Depot does have a program but many of their employee dont know about it - go to the service desk and ask - good luck and congrats on the 3 month old baby boy - what part of chicago are you from?
I don't know if you live in Chicago, but a couple of times a year the city does a drop off day for things like batteries, paint, old appliances, stuff that can be recycled or needs to be disposed of properly. Call 311 or check the city website for details. ( I can't remember which dept. sponsers it - sorry!) They have several drop off sites around the city and when you bring your stuff you get a bunch of free blue bags! Kudos to you for not throwing them out!
They take them at my library (in chicago) you mgiht want to check your local library.
I think Radio Shack takes batteries!
