Best Way to Catch a *Gulp* Vermin?

I noticed a few days ago a piece of fruit in my fruit bowl seemed to have been "nibbled"on a very tiny spot...but though hey it was the kids or something.

My husband even thought the same and took that piece to work cut off the nibbles and after washing it...ate it for lunch. NOw I am thinking "ewwwww"!!!

This morning the top apple in the bowl was about 1/5th gone...eaten...no way around the fact we have a visitor at night.

I can't find any droppings to cue me in as to if it is a mouse or rat...I thought they always left droppings. But nope...

What are the best ways to catch it...traps (which kind?) We even have a cat and she hasn't gotten whatever it is...and she has in the past.

Our house is under construction, so I am pretty sure it has a choice of ways to get in...I just want to catch whatever it is before it brings friends. Thanks!!

What can I do next?

It's probably a mouse. If it is getting cooler where you are they are trying to move in and set up house before the cold comes.
In our summer home we use regular mousetraps and peanut butter.
You can place it right next to your fruit bowl, then in the am clean real well.
Be sure to put all your food away and take out the trash in case any of his friends have found the entrance to the new mansion.
Mice are annoying but probably won't bring in any terrible diseases

DO NOT use poison. The mouse will ingest it then go into the walls where his hiding place is. He will then die in there and that is a real pain in the tuckus to clean up if he starts to rot.

Good old fashioned snap trap with some stinky cheese or some other tasty morsel should do the trick. Eeeks!

We like to use the sticky traps that are not killing traps. Mice and rats don't avoid these like they do the spring traps. They get caught on the sticky stuff, and you hear them rustling around when they try to get out. The issue then is that you have a trapped live critter on this tray :) I leave the disposal issue up to my DH. This works much better than the other traps in our experience.

We bought an electric mouse trap from amazon. It's a little pricey at $20, but it's reusable. You just put peanut butter in it and the mouse runs in and bam, it's dead. Then, all you have to do is open the little door and dump it out. We loved it. We used to live next to an open field so the winter months were awful and we had tons of mice. and this mouse trap was the best solution we found. good luck!

We used the glue/sticky pads with some success. Once I left a sinkful of dishwater & caught/drowned one that way! Blecch.... it was startling, to say the least.

That was in Missouri. Hubs ended up plugging the holes. We moved to Shanghai & graduated to rats! Our apartment leasing office gave us giant-sized glue pads. Hubs caught one, threw it on top of trash pile outside (it was still kicking, etc) & scared the daylights out of the housekeepers the next a.m.!

The second rat was more wily & we never caught him. We had to move to another apartment complex anyway, so that was the end of that chapter.
