Okay, this might be kind of stupid, but can a lovebird and a parakeet mate and produce offspring? They're sitting on a couple of eggs right now....

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

After a few months of being aggressive to the other birds, just as I was about to get rid of him, the lovebird finally fell in love with a white parakeet. You've never seen such love. He grooms her constantly. He's green with a black head, and she's white. The babies would be amazing.

The two birds were in a nesting box together and all the other birds were fascinated by the interracial relationship and kept peering in the box and messing with the eggs. I tried moving them indoors, and now she won't sit on the eggs. So if this batch was viable, they're probably not any more.

I could be wrong, but I think they may be closely related enough. But I guess you will know soon enough. I forget how long they are cooking in there. You could candle them to see if the eggs are fertilized. Hold them up to a flashlight and see what you see. It's pretty obvious if a bird is forming inside.

I guess you'll find out in a week or so! Would it be the bird equivalent of a mule?

I have no idea, as birds are the one species of animal I've never had as a pet. But I had to say I love your double entendre, if you meant it that way. You know, asking "bird lovers" about "bird lovers..."

Happy hatching!

That's really strange since these do not usually get along very well.
Lovebirds are VERY picky and can be very aggressive toward other birds.
I'm thinking that it's not possible but.......
Like the other post said, you will know in a few weeks ")

Well, if they don't go back to caring for the eggs....I suppose once you are sure they birds are done, you could break one open and see if there's an embryo?

How interesting.

Woohoohoo! The birds are gettin' busy in your house!
You know, I don't KNOW how that works. I discussed it with my kids who are closer to 5th grade science than I am.
But I suppose if a female lays an egg and the male fertilizes it, then you may be the proud Grandma of a family of Lovekeets. Or Parabirds.....
BAHAHA, you're killin' me!

Wow that would be an interesting mix and adorable too!!! I'm not sure if they can produce offspring but I know just about anything can try to mate. I had a single dove growing up and she would lay eggs every couple months. Of course they weren't fertilized because she didn't have a mate. I can't wait to hear of the update to see if they are fertilized eggs or not!

They can mate, but from my understanding they cannot produce offspring because they are different species. Those eggs are most likely unfertilized. My female cockatiel would produce large clutches of unfertilized eggs rather frequently. I bred and raised cockatiels, so my info is based on what I know about those birds. Keep us posted...I'd love to know what happens!
