i want to thank everyone who responded to my bug bite concern. the wound is significantly smaller than when i posed the question originally. i've been putting neosporin on it every day. if it continues into next week, which i don't think it will, i will phone the doctor again but they had told me to just keep an eye on it and use the ointment for now. thank again for all your responses!
it's getting better now. i have used the antibiotic ointment for a few days and i think that's doing the trick.
could it be a spider bite? sometimes they take awhile to heal. The center of the bite seems to be the part that scabs over.
What did the doc say? I would suggest tea tree oil to help heal the wound,regardless of how he got it.

I don't want to alarm you, but are you sure it's not a tick? I had what I thought was a mosquito bite on my leg for MONTHS and it was just scabbing, itching, etc. My husband finally took a look at it after my usual grousing (it was on the back of my leg) and declasred that it was a tick! Maybe you should get it looked at by your pediatrician. Better safe than sorry. Good luck!
I would take him to the doctor. It may just be a bug bite, or like one of the other ladies said, a tick. And besides, while you are there, you could bring up your concerns about diabetes. Good luck!
This happened to me a few years back i had an insect bit on my leg and it would not go away..i heard from someone else to put toothpaste on it overnight (it has to be paste not gel) it seemed to do the trick.

As far as the picture goes, scan it or transfer the pix to your computer and erase the bite in photoshop or the edit program of your picture software. Kodak Easyshare has a free download, you can edit it there. Easy fix.
A couple of things come to mind.
1. It could be that your som is allergic to whatever bit him. I am allergic to mosquitoes and get large welts that last longer than for most people.
2. Is it still an ugly scab or just healing slowly. If it's healing slowly, I wouldn't worry about it. But if it seems like it is festering, get it checked. Brown Recluse Spider bites can be difficult to heal, although I believe he would have other symptoms if it was a spider bite.
3. I'm a photographer and any decent photographer should offer to retouch your son's mark in the photos.

Take him to the doctor. If it is red around it, it is very likely that the wound/bite is infected. The doctor will know what to do and after more than two weeks it should have been healed. Do not hesitate, call the doctor for your son to be seen.
MRSA also can look like a bug bite. Glad you have the dr.'s appointment. Good luck.
It is imperative that you take him to the doctors immediately. I am not trying to alarm you, but based on the info it sounds like he may have been bitten by a brown recluse spider. You will want to have that ruled out as soon as possible. Time is of the essence. Pray that it is not this spider because the poison of it has the potential to be very damaging to skin tissue. My hope is that it's a tick or just a simple infection, but don't delay. This could continue to get worse and the only "cure" is to have major surgery to cut out the poison. Look it up online to see if the symptoms are similar or if some of the examples of photos resemble your son's and seek professional advice at once.

Take him to the doctor. There are other medical reasons for the bump to not heal- could be infected, and I would not rule out a medical diagnosis based on an online quiz.
it seems like you know what to do. have your child tested to see if he is diabetic or not. if a photographer did pics then see if he can put them on photoshop and minimize the look of the bug bite on his face.

It sounds like he may have developed a secondary infection from scratching the bug bite. Kids carry lots of germs on their hands, and when they scratch wounds, often they become infected, and have the appearance that the original wound has "not healed". He may need antibiotics. You might want to have your pediatrician take a look. In the meantime, you might want to put Bacitracin or neosporin on it for a few days. In this area, you also want to watch out for lyme disease....make sure it doesn't have the appearance of a bullseye.

Definitely get him checked by the doctor and be sure to question MRSA. It is goin around like wild flower and is very easy to get. My 4 year old niece has it and that is what had happened to her. It may not be your sons case but it won't hurt to ask.
I would still have him tested for diabetes. If it runs in your family, it's something to be concerned about. Kids younger and younger are being diagnosed with Type 2, and that's nothing to blow off.
