Hello Mamas~
I am looking to buy a new camera and would love any suggestions. We have had two kodak and have not been very happy. I can't decide if I should go for a real small one or a better overall picture. I am by no means a great photographer but I like good pictures. I would like to find one that has a quick shutter speed (i think that is what it is called). We are looking to spend $300 (less would be wonderful). I know you can't get top of the line for that but I don't need the best.
Thanks

Canon Powershot - love this camera! You can usually get it at walmart and buy a 3 year warranty with it, still around $200-$250.

i got the canon power shot elph when my original camera fell into the bath tub when my son took a tumble. i love it my previous camera was the canon power shot A590 it was fried after going into the full bath tub and i thought it was a goner but i kept it and tried it about 4 months after it happened and it had dried out and worked like new! I have tried Kodak, and Nikon and didn't like them very much. I will only use Canon from now on. The elph is very small so it is easy to stick my pocket and still run around and play with my son.

Hi,
I bought a Canon Powershot SX110IS this summer. It has a 10x zoom which is great for soccer games, concerts, vacation. We took it to Yellowstone and got some fabulous shots. It is pretty user friendly but you can manually set it also (too far over my head) but it works great as a point and shoot. Still learning things about it - but I've gotten great photos so far!

My husband and I both have a Sony Cybershot. His is a little older than mine, I think he got his in 2001 or 2002, and mine was given to me in 2004. They are both GREAT and we have never had a problem with either one. We have moved cross country, they have rattled around in backpacks and in my purse...just really been used a ton. I looked up what a new one looks like and I am jealous of you already! lol
Check it out, and the price is right!

Hey K.- I just wanted to throw in here something that happened to us. My in-laws live on a lake and we go to the waterpark a few times a year so my husband bought the Canon Powershot D10 and we've been very happy with it. It's waterproof and pretty durable for a digital camera. It's also about $300. Just another thing to think about. Good luck on this!

K., I was looking for the same thing - a camera with faster shutter speed so I wouldn't miss those cute shots of my son. I spent weeks researching cameras. I looked at both Point and Shoot, Digital SLR's and Advanced Point and Shoots. I ended up going with an Advanced Point and Shoot, the Sony Cyber-shot 9.1 megapixels. Mine has 15x optical zoom and a 3" screen. It has so many great features, is so easy to use, and the picture quality is amazing. In my research I learned that a compact point and shoot is never going to be as fast, but if you decide to go that route, the Canon is the best. Good luck with your decision.

I also think the Canon PowerShot line is a good one to look into. They have several models - from basic to advanced - with a wide range of price points. We have a PowerShot SD700 IS and a PowerShot S5IS and are happy with both. Ours are both older models, but I have read positive reviews of the newer model of the SD line (I think it's like a 1100 or 1200?).

K.,
I couldn't be happier with our Canon Elph's We have a 10 megapixel and an 8 megapixel. They both take awesome pictures up close and at a little distance. seem to be pretty durable, my husband has the 10 megapixel in Iraq and hasn't destroyed it yet, unlike the Kodak from his last deployment. Has plenty of features if you want to play a little. I paid around $225 for his 10 megapixel, and $150 for my 8 megapixel so they are definitely in your price range. Good luck!

I have two Sony cybershot cameras and loved them. We currently got the one that doesn't have the touch screen and it was between $200-$300. It takes great pictures and so easy.

I have now had 2 Cannons and have LOVED both of them. I did a lot of research before we bought our last one and all the ones Consumer Reports recommended were Cannons. Also, when I went to purchase the camera, the man at the camera store said 2 things. 1). If you have to deal with a company for repairs or anything else, Cannon is the EASIEST and BEST one to deal with. 2). Cannon is the only brand that still makes 100% of the parts for all their cameras. I won't even consider buying anything else next time we need to buy a new camera!

Like others, I love the Canon Elph line of cameras. My extended family has had about 5 of them and we're all happy with them. They take great pictures and are small enough to slip into your pockets so it can always be ready for a snapshot of your kids.

We have a Canon Powershot SD1100 IS, and it takes great pictures and great video, and the battery charge lasts a long time, so you aren't charging every day ( which was one of our major complaints with our Kodak we had before). It has a titaneum case, and is nearly indestructible, it seems, my DH closed it in the back hatch of our van, and it didn't even crack anything, there is one small scratch in the case from that, and that is all.

i think it was right around $300.

K.,
I highly recommend the Cannon PowerShot Elph.
It takes great pictures, good video (for those impromptu situations) and has special rechargeable batteries - which is important. We have had our camera for over two years now and I am still as happy with it as day one. I'd buy it again tomorrow if I lost it.

canon powershots...they are incredible cameras that are easy to use...both in the taking of the pictures and in working with the downloading to computer.

I would recommend one that has a at least 10 megapixels...you will get much better quality pictures and have the option of blowing them up to larger sizes.

I would also recommend waiting to get it. If you wait until Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) there are always a few incredible deals out there. I would avoid Best Buy...that store is nuts on Black Friday...but stores like Staples, Office Depot, Walmart, Target, Etc all tend to run at least one good camera deal. If you can wait a bit then you can score a great camera at a great price.

check www.cnet.com they have really helpful reviews. The Cannon digital elph and power shot are both great. You are not going to get fast shutter speed for $300. To do that you need to go to a digital SLR and they are more expensive. Good luck!

Hi K.,
I had to replace my Nikon after dropping it and breaking the lens. After much research (including reading tons of reviews and asking a pro photographer) I decided on the Canon Power Shot (SD1200 IS ~DIGITAL Elph) and I LOVE it!! Great pics (10.0 megapixels), easy to use, AND it survived a fall on the rocky shore of Lake Superior! You should be able to find one for $199, I got mine on sale at Walmart for $189.99. Good luck and happy picture taking!

I have a Canon PowerShot and absolutely LOVE it! I can carry it in my purse or pocket, and it takes great pictures! I've had it for 4 years and is just beginning to show signs of a little wear. When I'm ready to buy a new one, I will definitely be purchasing another Canon PowerShot!
