I have been without a digital camera for a few months and have been using my iPhone for pictures, it works but I really want a new camera. My husband and I have set aside some savings to buy one but we don't know what to get. You have looked at stores and online and I want to know what you like and what features you can't live without. I really like Nikon but he wants to go with a Canon. What brand have you found to be really good?
Thanks for any help!

My husband and I bought a Fugi Finepix 4 1/2 years ago and it still works fantastic. With a 1 gig memory card it records awesome videos, up to about 15 min or so and takes a tons of pictures.

Grandpa is a photographer and also loves the newer Fugi's as well. He also loves the Cannons. Hope this helps.

We have a Canon ELPH that is quite a few years old. Takes fantastic pictures and also does video. And it's tiny, so I keep it in my purse at all times.

I just wrote this in another post about cameras...I have a Cannon S5IS and it is great! It takes awesome pictures that don't look digital. It has a ton of features and is easy to use.

For a point-and-shoot, I like the Canon PowerShot cameras. Easy to use, no lag time between when you push the button and take the picture, not too expensive for a lot of megapixals if you want to enlarge pictures. If you are looking for a DSLR, I think Nikon's are the way to go. I love being able to change lenses to get those really close or really far away shots and the quality of the pictures is just so much better than a point-and-shoot camera.

I'm partial to Nikon myself, my SLR, DSLR and my point-n-shoot are all Nikon. I personally find that Nikon has better in-camera stability, which is great so you don't have to have a tripod. I like their point-and-shoots because they are SUPER durable--I've dropped mine a ton and still takes great pictures, no need for any tuneups, no problems with lenses or anything. Also I think they are easy to learn how to use, but they also supply a lot of advanced features for if you are more into photography. I love that I can choose my aperture and things like that on my point-and-shoot...so I don't always have to take my d70 with me.

That being said, my sister has a Pasonic Lumix and she really likes it. I think its a bit bulky, less features, but pretty good picture quality. I really dislike my grandpa's Fuji---I just don't think it takes as good of pictures for the money as some others, and I find it annoying to use with a very touchy autofocus. But maybe its just that model.

What you need to look for is optical zoom (not digital zoom---that is essentially cropping the photo in camera), your file capabilities (size, megapixels, etc) and the compatibility for memory cards and battery. Rechargable Li-Poly batteries are the most powerful and last longest than anything that takes double As or even the fat c2 (i think) kind.

Canon SD870. I'm in love with this camera. We started with a Nikon, then moved to a Casio, then considered a Sony, but bought the Canon SD870. Best decision ever!

Actually I love Sony Cybershot. I have an older model but it is amazing at the quality of the photos!! Outdoor pictures come alive with colors and it is so vivid! My brother that dabbles in photography somewhat as a hobby loves his. He got one with a telephoto lens and it is amazing what he can get off just shooting a picture!! Sony's are durable too! Just my two cents.
