I recommend the Nikon Coolpix, there are several versions of it, ranging from $125-$400, I have an in between version and I absolutely love it. My husband who is an avid photographer has a very expensive SLR and is very impressed with the quality of photos and the ease of use. You will not be disappointed. Look for sales, I bought mine at Sears on sale and saved about $40.

My daughter just bought the "New" Nikon Cool-Pix, replacing her old "Cool Pix." It takes amazing pictures. She is a teen and HAD to have the new feature of the touch screen. Personally, I would have never gotten that feature on the camera. Without that feature, it is easily under $200. We bought ours at Best Buy and it was well worth the money to get the 2-year unlimited warranty because, in the past, we have had to utilize the warranty.

It has a fairly quick processing speed for the price (if you are taking a lot of sports or fast action pictures, this is needed). Plus, it's small and pocket-size and has some cool artistic features (i.e. sepia tones, black & white and others). I have a Sony-Cybershot and, lately, I have been opting to borrow my daughter's camera when I want to carry something not as bulky. And her camera is better at taking distant shots of kids on a stage. I have done that and am amazed at the clarity. It also takes short videos.

Very cool.

I enjoyed my Kodak Easy Share for almost 6 years~only problem was action shots, so no sports pics. A few months ago I stepped up to the Nikon Coolpix for better telephoto & action shots.

I love the Canon Powershot A series as a point and shoot. They take AA batteries (can use rechargeables) and take wonderful pictures. Many are under $200 on Amazon.

I've been purchasing Canon Cameras for decades! I especially enjoy the powershot series. An important thing to watch for is optical zoom; try for one that is 10x or more as that will allow you to be further away and still capture a quality photo. There are several models with this size zoom for $200 or less.

We love the Canon Powershot SD1100 IS. It takes pictures quickly so you don't miss fast moving toddlers. And focuses itself on faces.

Canon Powershots...just bought 2 SD1100IS...Love them! I also love how you can take video on them and they are good quality! I use it almost every day!

I bought our 2 from buydig.com. $139, no shipping cost and comes with a memory stick! Best value I could find...and the sight has a great reputation!!!

I just bought a Sony Cyber-shot with 10X zoom. It was originally $279.00, but I got it for 179 because someone bought it from Best Buy and decided to return it the next day. I previously had a Kodak Easy Share and even tho it was really easy to use, I ended up deleting most pictures because they came out blurry.

So, I'm giving Sony a shot.

I have the Canon Powershot that most of the other Moms that responded have. It is so easy to use. In fact, several people I know have purchased the same camera after seeing mine, It takes great pictures and has a decent video camera also. It is perfect for an amateur photographer. The only thing I miss is that I wish you could zoom in just a bit more but you need to spend more than $200 to get more zoom.

I recently wanted a camera for my birthday, and posted on mamasource suggestions for a good camera. After all the recommendations, most suggested a canon. I bought a Canon A1000IS and I just love it. It is so easy to use and takes great pictures. It is small, but not so small that I feel I will drop it. It comes in fun colors, and I got mine for $135 through Sam's online. It takes AA batteries, so no worries that my battery will run down at a bad time. I bought AA camera batteries and they are lasting great, and I keep an extra set in my case. If we are on vacation and I need batteries, I can be sure they will be easy to get. My husband and son also have Canons and we have been very happy with them

I have a fujifilm s7000 - it is great. It's a little on the larger side but it's idiot-proof and it has zoom. It was around 250.00 and I love it!

I love the Canons. We have had the SD700IS for 4-5 years, and we're very happy with it. It takes great pictures and is small enough to fit in your pocket. Ours was a lot more than $200, but I think you can get one for around that now. Make sure you get the IS (image stabilization)- it really helps with action shots. Highly recommended!

I was in your spot a couple of years ago. We were going on a trip out of country and I was so confused as to which type to buy so I began by going to Best Buy. I did have a few things that were important to me: fairly small - like palm size, simple to use with decent sized buttons and easy to follow directions to print, and not more than $150. After discussing several different brands, I settled on a Kodak. It has been the best camera! It runs on batteries not recharging. I have found using Lithium batteries to be best. The last 2 I have had in my camera for over a year and taken hundreds of pictures. Good luck and happy snapping!

I have a Canon PowerShot camera. I started out with the Elph model about 8 years ago and replaced it with a slightly more advanced model this year when we took a big trip. Both are digital, easy to use and I would absolutely recommend them to anyone!! They get great ratings on Consumer Reports too. I've taken many wonderful photos of family, trips, etc. with them. The one I have now has more features for zooming in, light settings, etc. but I believe both now come with the stabilization feature for action shots! Check out the Canon digital Elph or PowerShot. We got ours at Sears.

I have 2 different Canon Exilim cameras. One has a higher mega-pixel count and it says it is compatible for You-Tube. They both work great. We took the one on vacation and the pics came out fantastic. I think my husband paid about $100 for the first and $135 for the second. They take the SD memory card which now sells for about $20 for a 4 gb.

I have two digital cameras right now. I have an olympus D 380 from a few years ago. It is big and heavy and it is only 2 megapixels, but it takes double A batteries and uses a cord or a memory card which is so versatile and convenient. I also think the menu of options is so easy to navigate.

I also have a Sony cybershot. It has 10.1 mega pixels and a 4x zoom. It is little, light and has a big screen. It is shiny and pretty, but the battery is always dead and you have to use it's charger, so it would be a great idea to get 2 batteries for cameras like this.

I also have a handy cam video camera that can be video tape, video on the memory card or still pictures on the memory card. It is too big for a purse, but I love how many options it has, can charge while you are using it plugged into the wall and view on TV. It really needs a flash, that's a separate purchase.
