The main issue I have had is the direction of the brushes. If the goes around sideways the make the carpet really matted up. If they go around like a cylinder, like a vacuum, then the carpet is usually much cleaner and the surface is undamaged.

We have the hoover steam vac and I love it! So easy to use, and I think we got it for $100.

We LOVE our Bissell Pro Heat (It is the red one). I am sure there is a newer model out now because we've had ours over 3 years.

I like that it has the onboard heater. It is easy to use. We use the Hoover solution for Pets (green bottle at Home Depot). The solution is a 2x concentrate and about $20.

We've had 2 Bissells and 1 Hoover machines. All good... we prefer the pro heat for the on board heater. We have always shampooed our carpets ourselves, I don't want to rent a shampooer or use one from a cleaning service. I prefer to get my dirt out and not get someone else's dirt, ugh.

We got ours at Bed Bath and Beyond and with the weekly coupons they send out you can easily get 20% off.

I had a canister carpet shampooer and wished that I'd bought an upright. Since you don't have stairs and upright would be alright. The upright is easier to use.

Bissel Pro Heat. Ours has done us very well as a general use shampooer and is often borrowed by friends who are also happy with it.
