Has anyone ever used cod liver oil as a supplement for their toddler? If so, how did you get your little one to take it? Can you mix it with juice? Also, how much? how often? Was there a certain brand you liked?

We use the Carlson's Lab fish oil in Lemon Flavor made expecially for kids. I started my son on it when he was a year old. I started him out with 1/2 tsp, then gradually increased to 1 tsp/day. I generally give it to him straight from the bottle as he loves lemons anyways. He always asks for his lemon oil at dinner time :). Now the whole family takes it!

Hi Sharon-Carlsons or Nordic naturals are the best--they don't have a fishy taste and nordic naturals actually makes chewables. One tsp. a day is fine and you can mix it in juice but many of them have flavors. Just make sure what ever you are using has a purity guarantee.

Vitacost.com is a great disc. website for all supplements.

Thanks and let me know if you have more questions!!

Cod liver oil is a rather antiquated supplement that is not generally recommended anymore particularly for young children. Though its benefits include omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D (of which children are often not getting the recommended amounts, which has recently been increased), there are better sources of these for kids.

My children take a chewable DHA supplement that is all-natural and high-quality. They also take a children's chewable multi that contains the NEW recommended daily allowance of vitamin D, as well as lactoferrin, the milk protein found in breastmilk which is thought to enhance immunity.

Feel free to message me if I can give you any additional info. Best wishes!

Hi Sharon,
Cod liver oil is very high in Vitamin A, which is dangerous for young children. You can use fish oil, but not cod liver oil, its too dangerous. A kid in our area has major bone damage now and cannot walk anymore from taking too much vitamin A.
Our kids take the Dr. Sears brand of a DHA chewable, which contains fish oil, but you cannot taste it. They love it. You can order it off his website. Askdrsears.com OR you can buy another version of the same thing at a healthfood store. Just make sure you get something that is labeled for children.

Nordic Naturals makes Children's DHA it's 100% Artic Cod Liver Oil. Whole Foods sells it. It comes in tiny gel coated balls, strawberry flavored. My son LOVES them. We call them fish balls. They kind of pop in his mouth when he bites them. Thinks its really cool. Pretty expensive though. $11.00 for a bottle of 90 gels. They suggest 4 a day.

I just came back from a nutrition conference, the Harvard dietitician there says Nordic Naturals and Carlson's are top notch. Same brands I recommend!

I just mix mine in her rice milk..you can't taste it at all, no need to sweeten it.

Toddler's need DHA, we all do! But 75% of their brain grows within the first 3yrs of life..fully maturing by 25yrs old... :)

Yes, I did and we called it "poopfest" The entire house smelled like a barn for a week. My son blasted out of diaper after diaper after only one small dose.

Hey mom that's old school and yes it works your child will have fewer colds. You can put it in applesauce or something sweet because it taste bad, give it to the baby once a day one teaspoon and don't worry if you miss a day or the child don't take the whole spoon. Also look into health food stores might have other way of taking it like chewable tablets or something like that, because like I said that's old school and there should be some newer inprove products. Good luck

I would give my children a little piece of candy after taking the cod liver oil. They wanted the candy so they would go and get the cod liver oil themselves. The reason i started to give them cod liver oil was because they kept a cold and running nose. So every day i would give them a i/4 tsp of cod liver oil and candy no more colds and no more running nose.this really work.

We use Nordic Naturals brand liquid DHA (fish oil), which I get at Whole Foods. I put it in her almond milk mixed with chocolate flavored Pediasure, and she doesn't notice it. I use a little extra chocolate flavor than normal so that it covers the taste more.

Hi Sharon,

I grew up on cod liver oil tablets. When I had my sons, (both now grown), I gave them the liquid. By that time, they had flavors of cod liver oil. You can mix it in Orange juice if necessary, but my two didn't seem to mind taking it right out of the spoon. A teaspoon a day for toddlers is fine. I always gave it to them with breakfast. Hope this helps.

Seems like everyone's already covered my recommendations: Carlsons and Nordic Naturals. Many children have no trouble taking them if you start young. My 1 1/2 year old has a half teaspoon and 3 year old has a teaspoon daily.

I've used vitacost and iherb to purchase online. If you use iherb.com, make sure you get a promotion code to get $5 off your first order.

You're not nuts at all! Our children's doc. reccomends it and my FIL's cardiologist wants him on figh oils as well. My kids have been on them. I like the nordic naturals and Carlson's line the best. The BEST prices i find are at www.Vitacost.com I have ordered from them for years and have been tremendously pleased with their selections, services, and shipping. I find the chewable ones are easier for my kids than the liquid. I know others who are opposite. We experienced loose stools for a day - but once it's routine they are tremdously regular. In fact, it's really what keeps my daughter who gets constipated regular and i notice a difference with her eczema if I don't give them. They love them and I like knowing they are getting the essential fatty acids to help their little brains grow!

If you haven't found one yet...Professional Formula by Carlson makes a great cod liver oil with lemon flavor. It is smoother (not as thick) as other cod liver oils and tastes the best that I have found. When my baby was about 12 months old I gave it to him straight - probably around a teaspoon; he didn't grimace at all.
