I was wondering if anyone has built their own pool. How much did it cost? Was it worth it?

We love our pool! I can't help you with a quote since we built our pool 11 years ago. We chose to work with Riverbend and had a wonderful building experience. They were professional, efficient, and excellent quality. We have neighbors who had a very difficult time during their install, it took 2 companies and double the cost, not to mention their pool is falling apart and they put theirs in the year after we did. Our pool still looks brand new!

Hi J.,
I don't have a pool but did get two estimates for one. For the smallest pool available, 14'x30', one estimate was $24,000 and one was $27,000. After much thought and consideration, we decided not to do it for a couple of reasons. First, we don't plan on being in our house for thirty years so we would probably take a huge loss at resale time. More than one realtor friend has told us that one can expect less than half on the return of the cost of a pool. We just decided to be patient and when we're ready to upgrade to another home, we'll look for one with a pool. The second reason we waited was just because of the ages of our kids, with two toddler boys, we decided it was just a risk we were't ready to take. We have several friends with pools who all enjoy them but say they are a lot of work and sometimes they could do without them. But with the hot summers of Texas, I think I look forward to one in the next few years! :-)

We used Joy Pools in Corinth. Heated (but we never use the heater because the gas bill would be outrageous) 15,000 gallon salt-water play pool (3-5.6 ft deep) with a hand seeded deck, diamond brite finish, decorative tiles, scuppers, spa, tanning ledge, and flagstone coping with a raised wall was almost $50,000. Joy was a great company to work with and after 3 years are still giving us excellent service when we need them. You never make the money back on the pool; it doesn't ever resale for what you paid, but I love having it...especially when I was pregnant in the summer! We use the hot tub a lot in the winter after our daughter goes to bed and swim daily from mid-May through September. Is it worth it? That's a personal decision; it is to me.
Also a safety fence to enclose it from Katch-a-Kid was $2800.

We have recently recieved a bid and to get it right....the way we want it....with the decking and all.....a minimum of $75,000.

This is the "norm" for most of my neighbors as well. When we started talking about it, we spoke with neighbors, looked at their pools and asked what to expect. The $$ we got from neighbors ranged anywhere from about $60,000 (pool with little decking, not that nice) to over $100,000 (all decked out to the max)

Make sure you go with a very reputable company. Most people in my area either go with Robertson or Riverbend Sandler. The pool we looked at that had the most issues and the most unhappy owners was Hobart (but they got a good deal.... "you get what you pay for")

Do not expect to get your money out of when you sell.

We have built two pools at two different houses both with Pulliam. My family loves the pool, I love the hot tub. The first one was built back in '99 and cost about $36000. The one in 2006 cost about $33000 but didn't include the hot tub. Both had waterfalls and extra hand seeded decking and are large diving pools. The kids love the diving board! Diving pool water stays cooler than shallow pools too.
It is true you don't get much for them when you sell so it is best to not move after you build for at least 5+ years. Sometimes after 10 years they will need repairs but we've heard our old one is still in good shape. They are expensive to built and maintain and don't necessarily help you sell your house so only get one if you can truly afford it and intend to stay there awhile!

We used Tahitian Pools in Richardson. We put in a pebble-tec diving pool with spa, gas heater, Arizona ash stone decking, flower boxes, waterfall, fountain, and decking running to our back porch. This was 4 years, ago. Our cost was $44,000 then. It's a beautiful pool. We did have a few cracks caused by be the extreme temperature change. They were very quick to come and repair. Our neighbor's who used Riverbend and Sunset pools also had the same problem. My friend who used Robertson pools also had this problem. They had to pay for their repairs because their warranty was not the same as ours. Tahition warranty is lifetime, and the great thing is it transfers to new owners if we sell our home. But, I am sure you could contract a better warranty with any of these mentioned pool builders. I think each of these companies build beautiful pools.
