hey, as most of you already know, that me and my husband were having issues, to were i was getting abused.
Well we are now living in sep places. He took my job, so i currently have no job, and not really any income.
he was paying me 100. a week, but with a 2 year old, thats not really enough. i want a divorce, but i have no extra income.
Right now he is fighing me tooth and nail, because apparently now he has found God and is called to be a preacher, so divorce is agaist his religion. So we cant do the cheap way and just fill out some paperwork together, and go infront of a judge,
But I also dont have the money for a lawyer. Is there anyway that i can get him to have to pay for my lawyer?
Or is there a cheaper way to get a divorce, just keep in mind hes not helping me with this.
Thank you

What can I do next?

Call your local Domestic Violence shelter/agency and they will have all these answers for you. They have places you can live and they'll help you get a job and save money to get housing. Sometimes if you are living in one of these shelters it helps you get low income housing more quickly too.

Child care can be paid by the state and since you'll be a single mom you should not have any co-pay unless you get a job paying extremely well. You'll qualify for food stamps and other supplemental programs. Plus once you get papers filed he'll have to start paying child support. That will help you financially.

If you don't have transportation the shelter should have a vehicle they can give you rides in. They do all this to help you get stronger so you can stand up to your husband and know what you are supposed to do to protect your child and yourself.

Good luck in all that you are doing.

Grandma T. gave some good advise. Also, contact:

Georgia Legal Sevices Program
104 Marietta, Ste. 250
Atlanta, GA 30303
###-###-####
(800) 498-9469

Ask them if they can provide you with free legal services or services on a sliding scale basis (charge is based upon your income). If they can't, they should be able to refer you to an agency that can. There website also has a lot of useful information. Here it is:

I am really happy that you have separated from your husband. Stay strong. Try to resist the urge to jump back in to another relationship until you have had a chance to go through some counseling and do some emotional healing. If you take the time to do this right, you can eventually find someone who will lift you up and support you, make you feel loved, instead of hurting and intimidating you. Those nice guys really do exist but sometimes it takes us women getting our head on straight as well and being ready to receive their love.

Take care.

In addition to Gamma G's answers that is (usually) in each state called Legal Aid - it's law school students that help out with legal matters for people who can't afford an attorney. they are supervised so you won't be with a student on your own. Good luck, and stay strong - if he really had just found God he would be acting in a much more charitable way.

Try divorce by publication. There is a family law center in the Fulton County Courthouse. There, you can pick up divorce papers and receive free information from a lawyer. The fees are minimal, you must pay for a divorce announcement to appear in the Daily Report for a length of time ( I think 4-6 weeks). Once the required time has elapsed without your soon to be ex answering the add, a divorce is granted. I'm not sure about all the twists, turns, and/or hoops that you may have to do, but just be patient and prepare to see this thing thru if it is what you want.

Check with Dept. of Human Services to see what you are eligable to draw as far as help benefits for you and child, also inquire about some type of legal aid (lawyers that help low income people at no cost) if only to talk to them about questions of him paying lawyer and support for you and the child. Good Luck

I am not sure if this is still an option, but when I wanted a divorce from my abusive husband years ago, Iwent thru legal aid. I think if you are being abused they will help you. At that time the divorce cost me $90! That was the best $90 I EVER spent!

He's playing the power and control game, he thinks he has all the power and control and is doing his best to maintain it. In an abusive relationship the most dangerous time for the victim is when they move out and begin to re-establish their own control on their life.
You need legal advice, since each state has different divorce laws. You can contact a domestic violence shelter and see what help they can offer, you can also contact the National Domestic Violence Center in Houston TX and the National Women's Law Center in Washington DC both agencies can offer advice and maybe help you to find an attorney. Many shelters only offer a two-six week stay because of space concerns. However they can also offer advice about services available in your area. Contact your state unemployment office and see if you can get unemployment. Most state employment offices offer resume writing services and job openings, contact them also. Look into employment agencies that offer temp and permanent placements.
Good luck, you can do this. Just keep looking for help. Often one agency can tell you about services with other agencies.
