My son was circumsized as a baby and now that he is 5 the opening of where he urinates is too small causing him to have to point way down and tuck under to urinate in the toilet and it takes him forever to go potty. Everything is placed correctly just to small of an opening. He has an appointment coming up with a pediatric urologist but will probably need surgery to make the opening bigger. Does anyone have a son or know someone who had to have this done and if so how was the surgery (anesthsia needed, etc) and the recovery time. There is another condition where the opening is in the wrong spot but he doesn't have that. Any advice or help is greatly appreciated. I'm a little scared for him to have to go through this. Thanks

What can I do next?

Hi J. -

My son had the same condition. We didn't notice it until he was starting to stand up to go potty and his stream would go way to the left. He's five now, but he had the surgery when he was three and a half. He also had a recircumcision done at the same time as well as an umbilical hernia repair. We figured since he had to be under general anesthesia we should do everything at once.

That said, it's kind of hard to say exactly how long the recovery was for that versus the other surgeries. He tolerated it well and he has absolutely no problems now. We did have to apply a steroid cream to the opening at least once a day for a while, which wasn't very pleasant for him. You need to do that so that the hole doesn't close again, but it was pretty uncomfortable for him because you have to kind of open up the hole.

His surgeon was Dr. Cheng out of Children's Memorial and I highly recommend him. He's got a great bedside manner and my son really liked him.

I hope I helped some. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi-

My son had this done when he was 3. Potty training was impossible and we found out it was because the urethra opening was too small. He had what the pediatric urologist called a meatotomy (not sure if I spelled that right), where they basically went in and made the opening larger. They did a general anesthetic, but the procedure was really fast and was done in the out-patient clinic. My son woke up really quickly and within about an hour after surgery we went home. We even stopped at McDonald's for a snack on the way home and he played in the playland there. Other than crying a little bit the first few times he went to the bathroom, he was fine. There was a small scab, that was it. He was back at his preschool a day later, and was great. And going to the bathroom was so easy after that! I was really glad we did the surgery.

My son had this surgery last year. We noticed when he was potty trained that he would pee all over the walls. We started watching him and that's when we noticed it, his hole was the size of a pinhole. The surgery went great! The anesthesiologist at Edward Hospital was great, he gave him a liquid cocktail that made the separation from us into the surgery room very easy for him, I wish they gave us some!! :)
He recovered so well. The initial time he went pee when we got home burned but a couple seconds into it the pain went away. We used steroid cream the first week to keep infection down and we haven't had to think about it since. Our doctor was from Edward Hospital in Naperville and he was great! If you need a referral let me know. I'll find his name! Best of luck, try not to worry too much!!

Both of my sons had this surgery. They both had the exact same issue with having to tuck down because the stream would go practically straight up in the air. The hole was so small that it actually created more force and the stream could go 4 feet in the air. DH was impressed.

For both boys the surgery required general anesthesia, did not take long and recovery was quick. Boy #1 had some issues because he still (8 years later) doesn't particularly like to be around strangers so he didn't take too well to all the doctors and nurses. He also had a rough time coming out of anesthesia. Boy #2 was a piece of cake.

Overall, it helped both boys tremendously and they can now use the restroom without difficulty!
