Does the Weather Affect Your Energy and Mood? I Need Some Tips...

I am just wondering if anyone else goes through this. Anytime the weather changes drastically (very overcast, cold, rainy) I become this different person! I get so lethargic, all my lists of things to do go to pot, I can barely keep my eyes open because I am so tired. I am usually a go-getter and have a lot of energy, but the overcast weather just turns me into a zombie. Last week it was 75 degrees out and we have had sunny days for about 3 months straight, then on Tuesday it dropped to the 40's and has rained all day, every day and even snowed on and off. So, does the weather affect you ladies this way? Any tips for avoiding it? Working out usually helps a little, but not even a run on the treadmill woke me up today. I ended up taking a nap and then a long bath, now I am partially functioning (but would love to really just go back to bed for a few days till the rain stops and the sun comes out!)

What can I do next?

I get bored if the weather stays the same for too long. Even if it's beautiful, perfect weather. I like severe (but safe :) weather. I like rainy or snowy days. It's easier for me to get motivated to do inside stuff if the weather outside is bad. I like all kinds of weather, even extreme. I guess that's why I live outside Chicago.

it's called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)...you can talk to your primary care physician or you can buy a "sun lamp" to imitate the sun for your body...

A lot of people have this...you aren't weird or something like that - just dreary weather makes your dreary!!

I hope you get a sun lamp and notice the difference!!

Yes, which is why I love living in southern Florida, notwithstanding the humidity.

I've heard good things about light boxes too.

i get really happy when the seasons change. every season is fun (to me) for the first few weeks lol. my favorites are spring and fall, so as you can imagine i am in hog heaven now - i LOVE the fall leaves, the brisk breezes, the kids playing in the backyard. winter is probably my least favorite - my mom says it's because the sun is out so rarely, and we all miss out on (what is that, vitamin k? or something) that the sun gives. it IS true, but i imagine some people feel it more than others. there is definitely a spike in depression and suicides in the wintertime. sorry! the other ladies are right, and you can take supplements to help but the best medicine is good old sunshine.

I'm with Teresa C. I was thinking Vit D supplements. I usually get 'depressed' of sorts in January and July every year, but I've determined it's because it's miserable to go outside those months - mainly due to smog extreme cold or heat (this past year was an exception - yay!). I can't get any exercise and then I get depressed. I actually enjoy an occasional cloudy day, and I really like rain.

Sounds like you need to supplement with vitamin D3. It's what you get from the sun. Google it and see if it describes how you're feeling at all.

I'm weird and LOVE cloudy days. I also love sunny days. I am outside often, though, so I think my skin soaks up the sun and carries over into cloudy days. I do get sick of winter, though. I enjoy it for a while, but that's the only weather I get really sick of...and tornadoes.

I'm in SLC, and I soooo know what you mean! 3 BLAH days in a row now, my house feels so dark and my kids seems extra whiney! I keep telling myself to blast some pop music and snap out of it, haha!

Yes this happens to me. I live in CO so I think the weather is similar to UT and we are due for a big change tomorrow after many days of 70's and 80's and sun...so I am expecting to be tired and lethargic and down in the dumps. I think I have SAD like Cheryl O. said though I have never done anything about it. But you are not weird. Happens to me all the time and I think my husband a bit too. Someday I am moving to Hawaii :)

Yes. Several years ago DH bought me "grow light" (really a lightbox like you would use for SADD) and it sits on my desk every winter when the light gets low or when there's a dark and dreary day.

Walk into ANY Starbucks and you'll see how Seattlites cope with 10 MONTHS of grey skies and damp, drizzly, weather that gets into your bones and makes your clothes all sticky, and your hair all frizzy, and promotes sinus infections that last for years.

WARM rooms (colors, temp), music, and stimulants.

At home, most of us/many of us, do exactly that.

When it's grey and yucky outside (situation normal), I climb in a hot shower, come out and crank up the music/make sure the heat is on, and have a Coke. (I prefer coke over coffee 99/100).

We also go tanning, take vitD supplements, and have a LOT of "workarounds". I'm talking things like videogames (kinnect is great for kids, because it keeps them moving in a small space), indoor play areas (McDonalds, Community Centers), and heading up above the snow line to get out of the rain.
