My daughter is 7 is ADHD and is on meds. This year in school has been really rough on her. Her main problem is focusing on school work and getting it finished in class. She's been very defiant and even more figity latley. Like always though there are good days and bad ones as well. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions to help with focusing. Someone told me to have her use a stress ball. Thank you!

What can I do next?

I taught emotionally handicapped students for 13 years and a good majority of them were ADHD not necessarily Emotionally handicapped, I always put in their IEP that they should be allowed to chew on straws, it kept them occupied, as well as having stress balls. Talk to the special ed department, they might have newer ideas!!

What medicine is she on? I have ADD (ADHD when i was a kid). I'm now 28 years old, married, got a great college education, have a 3 week old daughter. The good news is... there is hope for your daughter even though it may seem like things are so hard right now. I was just like her, couldn't focus. Diagnosed in second grade. My problem was that the meds made me figity and I didn't like the way they made me feel, I felt like I was jumpy all the time. Defiant didn't even come close to describing my issues!!!! I was on Ritalin back then (they don't prescribe that anymore) and I hated it. Talk to her doc and see if you can look at different meds. I heard great things about Strattera. I was on it before i got pregnant. No shaky side effects.

we have an almost fifteen year old who suffers from adhd and severe anxiety disorder. I'm not a doctor, but watch her sleeping paterns and talk to her about whats going on at school. is she in a special class? we put our daughter in a special class when she was around eleven and she did really well with it. the teachers work with them alot better and they tend to relate to them better. when our daughter was having the hardest problems, like refusing to take a shower. we talked to the teacher and she helped by talking to her and teaching her why it was important, plus they had an award system and when she did what she was suppose to for that day she would get points and by the end of the week she would get something special. you could talk to the school about this, or even try the reward system at home. good luck with this, and by the way our daughter is now a freshman in high school and getting all a's and b's with the exception of one c. so don't worry things will turn around. and if you have any questions feel free to write.

She may need her meds changed or adjusted. Other than that allow her frequent brakes.

My son is ADHD also, as well as my 6 yr old daughter. They have both been on meds, for over 2 yrs, and it has taken a long time to get the medication right, that has helped them. We have been thru a lot of different meds and just in the past yr have we found one that has realy worked. Just give it time, have patience, and in another 6 months or so, if she is still displaying this way, then try an alternative medicine. It will work out in the end. God bless

I am an occupational therapist who specializes in children with ADHD. I have found that many of the techniques for children with sensory processing disorder work great for kids with ADHD. Check out the book "The Out of Sync Child" or "Sensation Kids" Both of them should be at your local bookstore. One of the greatest things I have found for focus is the use of an exercise ball during homework. This would allow her to fidget and yet get the work done. If you would like suggestions for specific things like picking up the bedroom or remembering homework give me an email! I would love to help if I can.

i have heard that are certain dietary modifications you can make that will help keep her from getting so wound up. I am not exactly sure what they are, but it would probably worht looking into further.
