I have an unused fondue set with burners and those long sticks included. Money is tight this year for Xmas and I was thinking of re-gifting this set to my 8.5 yr old neice, along with the chocolate and marshmallows to get her started. Would your 8 yr old like this? My neice likes to cook, so I thought this might be fun for her and her parents to do. What else could I include? I can't really wrap up strawberries very easily for Xmas. Please feel free to tell me if this is an awful gift for a child.
due to y'all's concern about the fire-hazard, I decided to get her a sushi-making cookbook (it comes with the wooden rolling mats). I got her all the rice vinegar, mirin, seaweed, rice, sesame seeds, etc that she needs to get started. I think she'll like it. Xmas is tomorrow!

I would ask the mother, I know I would not allow my child to use a fondue set due to open flames and the burn/fire hazard.
I think that is really nice! If mom lets her cook, I don't think you even need to run it by mom. You can also buy prepackaged cheese fondue mix - just add shredded cheese. Or maybe you can give her a $5 grocery card.
you could include graham crackers, pretzels, rice crispie treats, brownies, etc..kids will dip just about anything in chocolate!
We do fondue dinners all the time at my house. It is FUN!
We just had a fondue dinner about 3 nights ago.
My daughter is 8... and she even helps us prep for it and can do her own.
If the box is intact and never opened... sure, give it to her.
Fondues are REAL fun... and good.
You can make anything with it....
we have a Fondue cookbook. There are many. Even probably some bargain priced ones from Barnes and Noble.
Fondues are not only for dessert items.
We cook Dinner, with it.
OUR Fondue set... is NOT with flames or a burner. It is an electric one.... with a safety quick detachable plug.
We got ours from Amazon.
Ours is safe.
all the best,
Susan
I think it's a great idea! My daughter is 6 and really likes to cook and she would love that. You could also include dried apricots, mangos, pineapple etc to dip in choc. Maybe a cute apron if you find one for cheap....
My daughter loves to do fondue. Whenever she has friends over, we break out the fondue set and chocolate! It is a mess, but every one loves it. Other fun nonperishable dipables: pretzle sticks.
I have never heard of it as a gift for a kid, but if they love to cook, why not. We eat our dessert fondue's with angel food cake, sugar cookies, wafer cookies, madelines, chewy caramels (not the hard candies), and flavored marshmellows, just to name a few.
We love fondue in our family, that used to be our christmas dinner (cheese and chocolate) due to our heritage. =)
I know I'm in the minority but really, a gift that requires fire and heating things up for an 8 year old? I don't really think that is age appropriate. If money is tight handmade gifts are always a big hit, like cookies, brownies and fudge!
My 10 year old son loves it when we pull out our fondue set! He thinks it's really cool to "cook" over the sterno can. If your neice likes to cook, she would probably get a kick out of it!
Very cute with the marshmallows and the chocolate. Although I would not let my child use it himself, it would be fun as a treat to use it as a family.
How fun would a sleep over be with fondue too!! I'd say that this is a gift that would definitely need adult help and supervision, but what FUN! My kids (5 and 6) LOVE fondue. I say do it.
I would normally say no way to this, but it sounds like she would probably enjoy it. I would get her a little fondue cookbook to go with it, this is the one I have and has lots of fun and easy dessert fondue recipes. Its a Barnes and Noble one, so you can go there and look around:

Get her some large marshmallows, pretzels, graham crackers and chocolates, she can use the marshmallows instead of strawberries (and easier to wrap).
A lot of dessert recipes call for alcohol, but chocolate ones can usually be substituted with a little bit of oj or heavy whipping cream.
Also, it depends on the set, is it the safer electric one that plugs in, does it get very hot, and does it need a flame? Some sets are safer and easier to work than others, so it depends.
My 8yo would love it.
Of course, he also asked for (and got) a toaster last year.
And as a parent I would LOVE a fondue set in the house. Loooooooove fondue.
