Hi SLM---Of course, foods are going to heal us...and keep us well. But, we must remember that it is the totality of the diet...not a handful of specific foods...that will have the biggest impact on our health. I work with and am taking a series of classes taught by a Naturopath who has her PhD in Nutrition. I would highly recommend you take this class. Please contact me for her information.
I totally agree with your comments about 'natural' healing. But there are a number of things to consider as you advance down that path. Herbs can act very much like prescription drugs with side-effects and potential interactions. You really have to know what you are doing...and what you need. I really don't know what my body needs...only my body knows. And even though an herb might be good for fibro, it might not be good for your body. That is why eating a well-balance plant based diet is the place to start. Keep a food diary so that you can track what foods your body might not like...at that time.
Another thing I've learned that sometimes even a 'good' diet is not enough. Our health is challenged from so many different things these days...increased pollution, newer and more powerful chemicals, etc...and our food is becoming less and less nutrituous because of the way it is grown, even organic. Organics are pesticide and herbicide 'free' but they are still picked before they are ripe, shipped across the country and sit in the store for days...and months (apples) before we finally eat them. Most of the nutrients are taken from the soil just prior to ripening so the food starts with inadequate nutrition. The minute something is picked, enzymes start to prepare the food for digestion. We do need help.
But vitamins are not the answer either. A man-made multi is out of balance compared to the tens of thousands of nutrients found in food. That can cause damage in the body if those nutrients are not needed. Your best bet is a supplement made from food. My family eats one that is made from 15 different fruits and veggies and has bran from 2 grains, backed by independent research (not done by the manufacturer).
If you have any questions I'd be honored to discuss them with you. I can tell you about Dr. Pam's Wellness 101...or any of the other concepts I've touched on here. Good luck...be well. D.
