Foods That Heal, Alternative Healing, Etc?

I'm wondering how many of you have given up on doctors for the everyday things and turned to prayer, relaxation, and studying what foods cause this or that?

I've been forced to so often through the years. I've suffered a lot of really dumb things and it took years to learn that it was fibromyalgia. I've tried to learn all I can about healing from a spiritual standpoint. But it also occurs to me as a believer I know that God created the plants and herbs for more than just eating. In fact, the herbs are specifically mentioned in the creation account in the first chapter of the Bible. I read it again recently and noticed that the plants and herbs and trees were created before even the sun and the moon. That's an interesting concept since we think of the sun and seasons as playing such an important role in growing things. Anyway, I'm getting off track.

So I guess if I were to boil down my biggest life complaints it would be pain, fatigue, and frequent urination with little urine output. I decided to sit down and start studying what the internet says are the benefits of all the foods I like to eat that are in season. I started my own little plan on what I would eat everyday. When I eat the things I want to based on what they cure or prevent or do for the body, it doesn't leave much room for eating bad foods! LOL. I've lost a few pounds and feel better already.

BUT... now the ringing in my ears is WORSE! UGH. So I sit down and decide someone has to have a list online of foods that are good or bad for ringing in the ears. Sure enough... Some of the food that are helping my pain and bladder symptoms are worse for ringing in the ears!

Anyway, I'd love to hear stories of what you have all found out that helps or hurts you in relation to food or any other ways you deal with being in decrepit bodies.

What can I do next?

For bladder/urine problems I drink tons of cranberry juice or take cranberry pills. They always work for me w/n a few hours.

I am a full believer in the healing powers of garlic, lemons and honey. I sneak them in my cooking whenever I can. For example, I've never served jelly w/rolls or biscuits...just honey. And I never cook any meat w/o adding garlic - whole or chopped. I buy lemon juice by the bottles and add it whenever I drink water.

I'm sure there are plenty of sites that offer lists of healing foods. Also try RealSimple.com - my monthly magazines always seem include some article of the healing power of foods.

gl and feel better!

Hi SLM---Of course, foods are going to heal us...and keep us well. But, we must remember that it is the totality of the diet...not a handful of specific foods...that will have the biggest impact on our health. I work with and am taking a series of classes taught by a Naturopath who has her PhD in Nutrition. I would highly recommend you take this class. Please contact me for her information.

I totally agree with your comments about 'natural' healing. But there are a number of things to consider as you advance down that path. Herbs can act very much like prescription drugs with side-effects and potential interactions. You really have to know what you are doing...and what you need. I really don't know what my body needs...only my body knows. And even though an herb might be good for fibro, it might not be good for your body. That is why eating a well-balance plant based diet is the place to start. Keep a food diary so that you can track what foods your body might not like...at that time.

Another thing I've learned that sometimes even a 'good' diet is not enough. Our health is challenged from so many different things these days...increased pollution, newer and more powerful chemicals, etc...and our food is becoming less and less nutrituous because of the way it is grown, even organic. Organics are pesticide and herbicide 'free' but they are still picked before they are ripe, shipped across the country and sit in the store for days...and months (apples) before we finally eat them. Most of the nutrients are taken from the soil just prior to ripening so the food starts with inadequate nutrition. The minute something is picked, enzymes start to prepare the food for digestion. We do need help.

But vitamins are not the answer either. A man-made multi is out of balance compared to the tens of thousands of nutrients found in food. That can cause damage in the body if those nutrients are not needed. Your best bet is a supplement made from food. My family eats one that is made from 15 different fruits and veggies and has bran from 2 grains, backed by independent research (not done by the manufacturer).

If you have any questions I'd be honored to discuss them with you. I can tell you about Dr. Pam's Wellness 101...or any of the other concepts I've touched on here. Good luck...be well. D.

I just ordered a book called "A More Excellent Way". It is about the illnesses we have & how most (not all) are caused by stress, anxiety, worry, & unforgiveness. This book was recommended by a Pastor.

Food is important too, because God wants us to take care of our bodies, but even gaining weight is caused by stress...

Added: SLM I wanted to say this to you as a fellow Christian. in Matthew it says to go to your brother or sister to point out their fault & in Proverbs 15:1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. I just read another one of your answers to a mom on here (Lazy sister in law) & you called her angry & mean spirited. I hate to say it but you sound just like what you called her. This all ties in with the book that I recommended to you regarding what illnesses are caused by (fear, anxiety, anger etc). This is not the first time I have read one of your answers & thought it harsh. It really sounds like you have some built up anger yourself. I say this to try to help you. God wouldn't talk to you that way & you shouldn't talk that way to others. So as hard as it may be, maybe you should start practicing putting on those kid gloves. We all have our bad days & say things we shouldn't, but when it starts to become a bad habit, its time to re-evaluate...

I truly wish you the best! I hope you & God figure out your illnesses. I know I am working on it with him, for me also.

I hope that I did not come across as harsh.

God Bless!
