Okay ladies, you will eat this one up. I can't believe it myself. Last Wednesday my boss came to me and told me that my job position had been eliminated and that I was to start on route the following morning. Just so you know I work in the Armored Truck Industry and I had been promoted last 2006 June to Admin Assist/Key Holder. The reason for my promotion was because they fired the Assistant Branch Manager out of the office and put him back on route (not sure why). Anyway's I went into the office and learned all the required task that the Assist Branch Manager had done including payroll, accounts payable, schedules, interviewing for new hires and scheduling the urine/polygraph test. Now they have a new District Manager that came to our branch about three weeks ago. He eliminated my position and put the same guy back to Assist Branch Manager on salary pay. Now I am back where I started two years ago. What do you think? I inquired to the new District Manager as to why I was not considered for the job and he stated because he had actually trained the other guy two years ago (before I got hired) and that he know this guys capabilities. There are a total of three woman that work here out of 80+ employees and none of us are in supervision.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies. I needed to hear all of that. I did contact an attorney and just go from there. Not sure what to call it yet, but I know it does not feel right. Thanks again

Before you hop to gender discrimination, (which it seems sorta like the case), you should consult a labor union such as Teamsters or another or at best an attorney.

Florida is a right to work state, however, your saving grace may be they never eliminated any position and lied to you by saying so. (or so it sounds. They do need to offer considerationa although, I do not believe that is law).

It my personal opinion, they can not promote, then demote, the hire back on the old guy. They need reasons for doing so. I wouldn't pull out gender discrimination until someone else can verify, or substantiate the claim. I say this because YOU don't want to seem like the bad guy - let someone else do that for you.

I know it stinks, but perhaps you should find yourself a career that you know you can promote in and even though it seems like "they" win, you can still hold your battle doing something better.

I don't think you were treated nicely, but I didn't catch why you think it's gender discrimination

Hi J.,

I do believe that what happended to you is unfair, even unethical, however I do not believe it is necessarily "gender discrimnation." I would also suggest contacting a labor union in your field to discuss possible action and also on Myflorida.com, (if you did not want to deal with a union or trades assoc.) under the employment section, it explains and allows you to submitt a complaint on an employer. Unfortunately, the gender card can not be used here (in my opinion) because if there are only three women in a eighty plus work environment, odds are, they won't be in a supervisory position...not because they are women, but the men to women ratio wieghs more on the men side. Best of Luck!

If you have already gone through all the correct people to find out why you were demoted without a good reason, I would go over their heads. It really does sound like you have a discrimination case. I doubt that your boss's boss would like to hear the way he is running their company. No company wants a potential lawsuit. Take this all the way to the top if you have to. They must have forgotten that this isn't 1955 anymore. Stand your ground and fight for what you believe in. It only takes one voice to make a big difference. Please let us know the outcome of the situation.

sincerly,
a mom that is behind you

I know you are mad, and I understand why. But it doesn't sound like he's playing favorites because he is a man and you are a woman. He was clear in stating it was because he trained him, and knew what he was capable of. If the guy is good, I am sure he'll manage to hold the position just fine. If you want more, and you are capable of more...then move on to a job that can offer you more. I work in management and can view it from the District Managers point. He wants to surround himself with strong employees that he knows he can trust. If you love the company and want more, show him you can offer the same.
