maybe a frame they could put a picture from the baptism
Hi everyone. My husband and I were just named Godparents to my best friend's little baby boy. They are not particularly religious (they are unitarian). I'm wondering what kind of nice gesture I could do, or gift or keepsake I could give, to show how proud I am to be his godparent?
Thanks!

Well it is our tradition to give a gold cross to the Godbaby...boy or girl. It is a nice gesture and can be kept forever. My kids are only 3 (girl) and 1(boy) and they wear their crosses to church every week. I know that you may be apprehensive to give a boy jewelry, I get that totally, but we Mediterraneans are much more lax on that! ;) LOL! You could also do maybe a bible or something else religious. As a Godparent, I would want to give something that they can use or at least keep forever. You could also consider opening a college fund account and putting in like $100 or something. Congratulations!
Offers to babysit, a handmade scrapbook, picture frames - these are things new parents love and appreciate.
I agree with Tori~All 3 of my kids (2 girls, 1 boy) received a cross necklace when they were baptised. It's not a tradition for us, but I loved the idea! We aren't super religious either, but I always love wearing my cross necklace, and there are many others out there who I see wearing one as well. My kids also received savings bonds from their godparents, and a baby's 1st bible. Even though they aren't super religious, it is still a religious event, so I always recommend something pertaining to that.
Also, anything engravable is always a great gift for a child!!
If you have the ability to do so...
How about a photo album/ mini scrapbook. Of his parents (as kids and adults), his parents and you, his first pictures, pics of grandparents... stories about how his parents met...
Kind of a family tree, welcoming him into the family.
Definitely a savings bond, or a check to start a bank account. You can always add to it on birthdays/milestones in the future.
You said they aren't particularly religious, so I'd do something that isn't religious at all.
I got way too many serious items myself, so I'd make something fun.
A coupon book that you make yourself. Make up what you want each coupon to be. i.e. 1 evening of babysitting. 1 afternoon at the park. 1 day at the zoo/aquarium/etc. 1 afternoon of babysitting so mom can take a nap. 1 morning of babysitting so mom can take a shower. 1 evening of babysitting so mom & dad can go out on the town.
You can make them funny or serious, whichever you think would go over well.
Our boys received lots of different gifts when they were baptized. They were given money and a savings bond from the godparents, and books and clothes from family. They also received train coin banks that were engraved with the date of their special day.
