OK, I asked what to buy and the overwhelming response was a Garmin Nuvi - but now I need to know which one? What models are good/bad, do you have or wish you had map updates and/or traffic or do you not need those features?

What can I do next?

I think mine might have the traffic features but I have never used it. But then again Im usually never in rush hour traffic. I schedule my appointments around it. I personally would go for the cheaper one. You pay extra for it to actually say the street names. Mine does, but the one I had before that didnt say the street names, it just told me where to turn, but the street name was on the map of course. So, my vote, get the cheapest one. I dont really use all the fancy gadgets that you pay extra for.

Oh, and dont leave it in your car or hide it while your car is parked. People love stealing them and will bust your window out for it. The last one I had got stolen. Make sure you can put a pin number in it so if it does get stolen, it doesnt have all your addresses available.

This is going to "out me" but used to work for Garmin...

Really it depends on what you want the unit to do for you. Do you drive a lot in traffic? If so you will enjoy one the has a T in the title (this is for traffic information and means that traffic is included in the sales price)...

Do you want small and compact or a wider screen? If you want a wider screen look for one with a W in the title.

Personally I would go with a 265WT...register that sucker too, you might be eligible for a free update but it has to be done in a certain amount of time from purchase. Later or in a year purchase the "lifetime updates" it's so worth it...just because roads change doesn't mean your map on the Nuvi changes.

Hope that helps a little.

If you want when you purchase it send me an email and I can give you more pointers on it...

I have a Garmin that need updating. It costs around $70 to update it each year. Instead of paying to update it again this year I plan to buy the Garmin nuvi 1450LMT that includes yearly updates. It cost around $180. It also has traffic updates which my old one doesn't.

I have used mine many times in the last 3 years since I got it to travel across country twice as well as in the city I live in. It's great, except when the streets change. Then it gets confused. Not a good thing if you are in a place you have never been before, have a car full of kids that are tired of traveling and cranky and your Garmin doesn't know how to get you from point A to point B.

I have a very basic Garmin and the one feature I wish it had was that it said the street name you were going to turn onto instead of "turn right 500 ft ahead!" Garmins are definitely a good choice though!

I got one free map update with mine. I think it's a 1300. I bought a DS case for it (all the GPS cases are black and boring. I use the pockets for the Garmin, the car cables, and my cell phone and it was only $14).

Just back up your data/favorites before updating maps. I occasionally argue with mine (and sometimes it's just b/c the road changed and Garmin hasn't updated yet), but it's been a good tool. I plan to get other maps for vacation later this year.

I don't leave mine in the car and I don't leave the window thingy on. I keep it low instead. I like the street names being said. It helps me as I'm driving not to look at it to try to figure out where my next street is. Sometimes it chooses the name vs the route number, but it's still handy to hear "turn right on Mill Street" vs "turn right". When I use voices that don't speak names, I find it less helpful.
